I hired a car between the dates 28/7/16 and 31/7/16 from Goldcar Rental's Fiumicino office (near Rome Fiumicino airport in Italy). At check-out, some pre-existing damages to the wheel and tyre of the car were marked on the form by the agent. He did this is quite a lazy way and I asked for confirmation that the circles he had drawn corresponded to the wheel damage. He assured me that they did and pointed out that the circles overlapped the part of the wheel/tyre that was damaged. This put my mind at ease. When I returned the car, at check-in they tried to claim that this was new damage, and that the circles they had originally drawn on my form did not correspond to the wheel/tyre damage. I disputed this vociferously and signed a form confirming that there was no new damage and that I had not been involved in any incidents. Four days later, a charge appeared on my credit card for £275 (as well as a non-sterling transaction fee of £8). I received no receipt or notification of this charge from Goldcar. I got in touch to protest and they continued to say that the damage was new. I would like to reiterate that the damage was already there, I did not create any new damage, and the agent assured me at check-out that he had noted the wheel and tyre damage. I have copies of all relevant documentation from this hire (original contract, and check-out / check-in forms). A search of twitter/google has revealed many similar cases of unhappy customers finding unexpected and unwarranted charges on their credit card statements after using Goldcar. They are very clearly an untrustworthy organisation that sets about extorting their customers. For this reason, I cannot say I am surprised by the charge, but I am absolutely unwilling to allow it to stand.
