Not being helpful when trying to resolve a debt problem

Complaint against British Gas

I rang Customer Services to try and resolve a debt issue with British Gas I explained that I had missed one month direct debit payment and could I reinstate it and continue with my monthly payments the electric payment was reinstated but they refused to do the gas unless I could pay £274 today which is impossible as I only have my state pension to live on. The gas bill seemed to high because I only use gas for heating and hot water since April this year I have only used hot water twice a day for washing up as I have a walk in shower and my washing machine is cold water fill only. The only resolution they gave me was to put a pre payment meter in which I do not want as I have a back problem and have just had spinal fusion done and I do not want to have to go out to get gas if the roads are icy or snow covered and as I live alone I have no one who could get it for me. I found the whole thing very upsetting and would like a better solution than a pre payment meter
