[LAPSED] Outrageous energy bill
Complaint against Spark Energy
I rented a small top floor flat of two beds one bath from 14 September 2016 to 14 September 2017 in York. I lived in it alone and barely used the lights and heating. Spark told me that my energy consumption would be £50 a month if I set up the direct debit with them. I initially thought this sounded high considering the property and my usage, but I agreed. After paying £600 for energy, most of which I barely consumed, I called Spark a month before my move out date to let them know that I would be closing my account and my direct debit. At that time, the representative said nothing of an outstanding bill, and I assumed that I owed NOTHING. On the 28th of September, Spark directly debited £50 from my account, despite having moved to a new property with a new supplier and having canceled my direct debit in August. Shocked by this charge and the fact that they hadn't canceled my direct debit as they said they would have, I called to enquire. I was then told that I actually had an outstanding bill of something over £600. How I could owe more than £1200 for a small flat for one person? No evidence was provided of my usage, and their claim has come out of nowhere with no prior warning, bills or information. Then a few weeks later, I received a text stating that I owed Spark £530.10. Why this amount now? Where are they getting these numbers from? I believe Spark has made an error with an outstanding debt from a previous tenant in the property before me, and that they are clearly overcharging me.
