Lights go out for Brilliant Energy as firm goes bust
Sometimes companies have an ironic name, just ask customers of Brilliant Energy, which has now gone bust.
Ofgem, the energy regulator, has confirmed that the company has ceased trading - but luckily customers won't be left in the cold.
The regulator takes over the company's contract until a new supplier can be found.
The issue for the consumer at the moment is that the big firms are hiking up prices like no tomorrow, with British Gas, E.on, EDF Energy, Scottish Power all increasing tariffs by around 10%.
So they're turning to smaller firms, like Brilliant Energy, in a bid to save money, only to find out the company's gone pop.
A Spokesman Said produced a handy guide for you if you're thinking of switching to a smaller provider, outlining the pros and cons.
Brilliant Energy has what's known as a white label agreement with Northumbria Energy, meaning customers' existing tariffs will be protected.
When Ofgem eventually finds a new supplier customers can choose whether or not to stick or twist.
Philippa Pickford, Ofgem’s director for future retail markets, said: "Our message to energy customers with Brilliant Energy is there is no need to worry, as under our safety net we will make sure your energy supplies are secure and your credit balance is protected.
"Ofgem will now choose a new supplier for you, ensuring you get the best deal possible. Whilst we’re doing this our advice is to ‘sit tight’ and don’t switch.
"You can rely on your energy supply as normal. We will update you when we have chosen a new supplier, who will then get in touch about your new tariff."
Matthew Vickers, chief executive at the Energy Ombudsman, said: "The collapse of an energy supplier can be a stressful and unsettling experience for consumers.
"If you are a Brilliant Energy customer, we would echo Ofgem’s advice to sit tight and don’t switch."
Brilliant Energy is the third firm to go bust this year so far, after nine ceased trading last year.
