Money-grabbing energy firms are at it again.

More than a million customers have been flagrantly overcharged on their pre-payment scheme.

Energy regulators allow companies to charge pre-pay customers a bit extra to cover the cost of installing a meter that can use top-up cards.

These are often installed in rented accommodation or for customers with a terrible credit record or who have been in debt.

So, basically, the people who can usually least afford to be ripped off are actually being ripped off.

Energy firms are like sharks - when they sense blood, they just swim in for the kill...

The extra cost for the meters in question shouldn't exceed £63-a-year, but research tells a very different story.

British Gas, with 760,000 prepay customers, charges £285 a year more than its best credit tariff — £222 over the odds.

At Npower, 320,000 pay £160 extra and 520,000 with E.on need £51.

Researchers Bulb said: “There’s no good reason for charging prepay customers so much more.”
