Although the Tories will grab the headlines the real story is that Labour received just 622 votes in the Chesham and Amershan by-election. It's over for Starmer.

Although I would not have forecast in a thousand years the Tories crushing by-election defeat at Chesham and Amersham it is a decent wake-up call for Boris.
First of all the voters wanted to kick the cat. The Conservatives have been in power for 11 years and it is always a good thing for the electorate to remind the politicians it is they who are the masters.
Secondly the whole place is full of Remainers. How shocking. They voted massively in favour in 2016 and since the Tories have such a large majority taking a swing against them in a by-election was a free bet.
Finally they don’t like HS2 going through their wonderful countryside. And who can blame them. The spending on HS2 is ridiculous and should never have been sanctioned.

Add to that the death of Cheryl Gillan the much loved MP which triggered off the by-election and was massively against HS2 and on reflection you can see why they voted the way they did.
Mind you all the headlines will be on the Tories but very quietly Labour had an absolute disaster.
They received just 622 votes behind the Greens and its 1.6% share of the vote was the worst performance in any by-election since the Second World War.
Add certain defeat at Batley and Spens and I can see Starmer flogging the big issue outside Camden Town Tube by the beginning of October.
