If Labour lose the Batley and Spens by-election it could lead to more muslim constituencies deserting them for pro-Palestinian candidates

​There’s a good piece in the Guardian (and nobody has said that in a long time) which basically spells out why Labour are going to lose next month’s Batley and Spens by-election and then in my view trigger off a certain challenge to Sir Kier Starmer’s leadership.

It is clear that a majority of the important 8,600 Muslim voters in this West Yorkshire constituency are planning to say farewell to Labour for the first time and switch to George Galloway who has always spoken up for the Palestinians, a seemingly  attractive voice following the latest bust-up with Israel.

​In the Guardian piece the constant refrain from the Muslims is that they have been taken for granted by Labour this last 25 years and the only reason the party is taking any notice right now is because they fear they might lose the seat without them.

A pretty good point. The Scots felt the same way about Labour. And look what Scotland looks like politically today.

​The Muslim politicians make one point I do not accept. They suggest Starmer is more interested in his anti-semitic policy than going after the Islamphobia either among the Tories or his own party. The reality is that the hatred of Jews by followers of Islam (either in the UK or in the Middle East) is impossible to deny and Starmer had to come down hard and do it publicly.

​The problem for Labour is if they lose Batley and Spens will other Muslim strongholds take heart (Blackburn, Bradford etc) and start voting in a bloc for a more attractive, more pro-Palestinian candidate. 

If they do that will be a nightmare no matter who runs Labour.
