[email protected] – the insurer that charges more if you use Hotmail

It was bizarre enough to discover that you pay extra for car insurance if your name is MOHAMMED, as we reported here.

It turns out your premium can rocket if you use a HOTMAIL email address, too.

Admiral - one of the UK’s biggest firms – were asked to quote for insurance using identical details but a different email address via three online comparison sites.

The quotes came back as:

GoCompare Hotmail £467.04. Gmail £435.68. Extra £31.36

MoneySupermarket Hotmail £507.21. Gmail £500.64. Extra £6.57

Confused Hotmail £380.80. Gmail £375.20. Extra £5.60

Admiral told The Sun newspaper, who carried out the investigation: "Certain domain names are associated with more accidents than others."

(We’re always reminding people to switch and save – perhaps Admiral should tell us which email provider to switch to and save a fortune.)

By the way, if your email address is [email protected] you have our sympathy…twice!
