The Co-op are slashing the costs of funerals in a bid to give relatives some peace of mind during one of the most difficult situations anyone can go through.

The company has vowed to undercut the cost of funerals quotes by their competitors - it comes after some families have resorted to not embalming their relatives' bodies in a bid to save cash.

Surely this is a nail in the coffin for extortionate funeral costs?

A 'cost of dying' report by insurer Sunlife showed the costs of UK funerals has soared by almost 70% to £4,271 in the last 10 years - a staggering increase.

Robert Maclachlan, managing director of Co-op Funeralcare and Life Planning, said: "Funerals are becoming increasingly price sensitive, and in the last two years we have seen a huge shift in the number of clients seeking affordable funeral choices.

"Our new guarantee means families choosing a funeral with us can be assured they are receiving a competitively-priced funeral, with no compromise on our high standards of care."

The Co-op's basic funeral plan comes in at just £1,895.
