Tumble dryer modification, waiting time up to next year over 7 months

Complaint against Hotpoint

My tumble dryer is one of the dryers at risk of fire, I completed the online registration and was contacted by Hotpoint notifying my registration was noted. the representative from Hotpoint explained that the waiting time could be as long as 10 weeks before the modification could be made to make the appliance safe and not to leave it on if no one was in the house. on 16/05/2016 I was contacted again by Hotpoint stating that the modification may not be able to be completed until next year, a wait of over 7 months! I explained that both myself and my partner work long hours and the only time we could use the machine would be when we are in bed so would not be safe due to the risk of fire. The representative explained that for £59 they would replace the machine, I asked why I should pay and what my rights were as a consumer as I had paid for a product that I cannot use, they explained it was not a recall but a modification so I was not entitled to a replacement project. I agreed to pay the £59 fee as we need a tumble dryer for our busy household and was advised they would call back but they did not. I cant understand how these companies can get away with supplying good that are not fit for purpose and pose a health and safety threat, what happens if it catches fire will they fit the bill of the damage to my property?
