Blatant increasing of advertised price to make money

Complaint against Holiday Gems

I booked a holiday on the Holiday Gems website on the 3rd August which was advertised for £628. I was happy with the price and paid a deposit. This was for 2 people with flights, half board and sea view and balcony room. 30 minutes later I also booked just a room on exactly the same basis for the recently widowed wife of my best friend who was going a few days earlier and coming to the hotel to join us. I paid in full for this room. The reason for our trip was to scatter my friends ashes and attend the unveiling of a plaque to him at the Malta command museum. The following day I was phoned and advised that our holiday would be an extra £96 "as there was such high demand for sea view rooms the supplier had put the price up". I enquired as to weather it applied to the other room I had booked but was told that booking has gone through fine, which seemed a little odd. On the 6th August I rang and asked why we were being charged £726 when the Holidays Gems website was still offering the holiday for £640. I was told that "this is because the website is 72 hours behind the current prices". I have continued to check and at no time over the last week has the price ever gotten to higher than £679. So Holiday Gems you are either lying about the prices of your holidays on the website or taking advantage of customers who have ordered and telling them they have to pay more knowing that they will want that keep their holiday. Either way I intend to put in a formal complaint to the ombudsman about them
