Complaint against Rail Discoveries
We have recently returned from a holiday in Switzerland entitled Glacier Express All inclusive in Winter. We have travelled with Great Rail on about six of their holidays ,three visiting Chur, St Moritz and Glacier Express. As usual the scenery was magnificent ,the company was friendly and the tour manager friendly helpful and informative. The accommodation was clean and very adequate , we were warm and the food was good and the packed lunches generous. The hotel staff in all three places were courteous and helpful. However , on this occasion when we had an excursion on The Benina Express,, which of course was breathtaking, we landed up for two hours in Tirano. This proved more than disappointing as the town which is very run down was completely shut for the siesta so for two hours we trailed around with scarcely a cafe open. The main attraction of the town ,their famous church was closed as well, having trekked up their specially to see it. The second complaint concerns the excursion on The Glacier Express, the journey and the train were as usual memorable , the reason why we have repeated the experience three times before.However on this occasion it was included on the journey back to Basel on route for home. We had three changes of train with all our luggage , standing for half an hour on a station in a heavy snowfall and a bitter wind , yes there was a waiting room up and down a long flight of steps or leave the luggage behind! I feel it involved very poor planning regarding the route that two of the highlights of the holiday should have been spoiled in this way. Incidentally although we expect some platform changes, and to sometimes do our own porterage the whole holiday required excessive changes and walking long distances with our luggage VERY much more than ever before. Only once at Tiefencastel was our luggage taken to and from the hotel. The third complaint concerns the accomodation on the train from Basel to Paris , There were seven passengers crammed in the compartment immediately behind the engine it was like a cupboard , uncomfortable for a long journey ,no leg room ,no where to put the luggage , the coffee trolley did not get to us and we could not get past it to the toilet or buffet car.. Incidentally luggage storage space was very limited throughout our journeys. By this time you will have realised that although much of the holiday was very good and we enjoyed it as before , the parts outlined were a let down to an otherwise wonderful holiday. Bearing this in mind we shall ensure that when we book another holiday we shall pay the extra money and go with Great Rail Journeys instead of Rail Discoveries and hopefully ensure that the standards remain as high as in the past. Although I see from your brochure that Great Rail offer a similar holiday at roughly the same price. Do I presume that in order to avoid a similar experience you must travel First Class? I would appreciate your comments please. joan Hearsum.
