Stanstead Airport agrees to refund after overcharging man by £90 for his parking
Stansted Airport has refunded a man who was forced to pay £90 on top of his parking bill to get his car out, after A Spokesman Said intervened.
Phil Newnham, from Northampton, paid £46.99 in advance to park his car from 4pm on March 7, until 10pm on the following day.
He flew to Frankfurt for work, returned and was preparing to leave at 8.30pm – well before his cut off time.
But when he got to the barrier, the machine said he had to pay an extra £90 to free his car.
Phil, 47, said there was no around that he could talk to about the charge so had to pay up.
"They have you by the balls if you want to go home. It would have been cheaper to have a taxi!"
It's not Phil's first time using the Stansted parking either.
"On many occasions I had used this car park and prepaid for the parking to make the turnaround quick.
"I feel Stansted need to return either the prepaid amount of £46.99, or I would prefer the £90 I had to pay to exit the car park."
Phil said it wasn't clear how he would resolve the complaint on the Stansted website, so he came to A Spokesman Said for help.
We asked Stansted to resolve the issue – and credit to them, they turned it around within a day.
A Stansted Airport spokesperson said Phil’s refund was on the way.
“It appears that for whatever reason the ANPR cameras couldn’t read Mr Newnham’s vehicle registration plate when he was leaving the car park - this can often be for things like mud on the number plate.”
The Stansted spokesperson said there is a help button at the barrier to contact a controller who can run a check on the vehicle and booking details and raise the barrier once confirmed.
Phil said he was glad to have A Spokesman Said in his corner.
"I am pleased that they will refund the parking. What I am really happy with is A Spokesman Said's professional response. Thank you."
