Insurance firms fail to offer cover for winter sports

Fewer than one in 10 insurance policies cover winter sports.

Fewer than one in 10 single-trip travel insurance policies cover people to do winter sports as part of their holiday. This is according to an analysis of 1,100 deals by Defaqto, a ratings service.

Many will be heading out to their winter getaways over the coming weeks, but travellers should be warned that they might not be covered for what they intend to do whilst away.

Only 7% of single-trip insurance policies and 17% of annual policies automatically include cover for winter sports, with 11% of these policies not offering any option for winter sports at all.

There is also variation between the policies that don’t offer options. The Defaqto research shows that some policies won’t even cover customers for a lost ski pass, for example, and only 29% will pay over £30 for each lost day because of piste conditions.

Those that like to be even more adventurous with their holidays should also know that 11% of the policies that say they offer winter cover don’t allow off-piste skiing. Others can have a variety of other restrictions.

Brian Brown, from Defaqto, said: ‘Winter sports holidays can be much riskier than standard beach holidays as you are more likely to get a serious injury or damage expensive ski equipment.

‘If you are planning a winter sports break, it’s vital you check your insurance covers you for this just in case the worst happens.’

Many other insurance policies might also restrict your cover so that driving invalidates any payout you might get. If you’re sent to hospital, your insurer might request blood tests for this reason.'

In parallel to this, complaints about travel insurers rose by almost 17% between April and September last year.

Consumers who plan adventurous trips like skiing and other winter sports should keep in mind that a lot more can go wrong on these holidays than the usual site-seeing trips. This means that travel insurance — and the right policy — is even more important.

The results of not finding the right insurance can include hefty medical bills after being treated in a foreign country, being stranded whilst injured and trying to get home, and losing money and holiday time due to bad weather conditions.

To make sure you avoid all these scenarios, find the right policy for you by using a comparison site like A Spokesman Said and reading up on the terms and conditions of each option to see if they offer proper winter sports cover.
