Comparing motorbike insurance – where to start

Two wheels are better than four. If you're reading this page, you probably agree.
Insurance companies though– for their own strange reasons – don't.

For them, a motorbike is riskier and therefore more expensive to insure.

With insurance calculated on risk: the more chance of an accident, the higher the costs.

Motorbikes are more likely to be involved, as a percentage, in a road accident.

Whether this is fair or not – how many of those accidents are bikers fault? – it is an unfortunate fact of life.

So, if you do need motorbike insurance, we suggest you go for getting the cheapest around; finding the best deal at the best possible rate.

You can do so using the free price comparison tool.

Whack in your details and see how much you can save.

What type of bike ?

The type of bike you ride is a big factor in your insurance costs.

The most obvious was this is the case is in terms of power and size: the bigger the bike, the bigger your bills are likely to be.

So, for instance, a Honda Rebel is going to cost a lot less to insure than a Suzuki Hayabusa.

However, the type of bike you have the type of insurance you need can differ in other ways too.

Classic bikes, for instance, often have lower premiums. The reason behind this is simple: if you are have a classic bike you're more likely to take care of it.

Bikes between 15 and 25 years old are generally considered a classic bike.

On the other hand, if you've modified your bike, it's likely to cost more to ensure it – even if the mods are intended to make the bike safer!

Insurers generally just don't like changes to the factory spec.

But remember, if you carry out any modifications to your vehicle, be sure to alert to your insurance provider.

It may mean paying a higher premium. However, if you don't and you need to make a claim, they may refuse to pay out.

Is Multi - bike insurance a good idea ?

If you own two or more bikes, you may want to consider multi-bike insurance.

It can be a lot less hassle than insuring multiple bikes separately. It can also be cheaper.

However, a multi-bike insurance policy may not be best for all.

For instance, if you use your many bikes for different purposes, having a blanket, multi-bike policy for for all of them could mean paying for extra coverage for certain bikes that you do not need.

For a bike you ride infrequently, for instance, a comprehensive policy may not be needed. That's because, if the bike spends most of the year sat in your garage, the chance of you having an accident on it is a lot lower than a bike you ride daily.

Instead, you may only want an insurance policy to cover it for theft.

So, work out what you use your bikes for, when and how much. It may still be cheaper to insure all on one policy, it may not. Run a few comparisons to find out.

Quick tips on bringing down your motorbike insurance costs

A good way to reduce your motorbike insurance costs is to prove how good of a rider you are.

Obviously having a no claims bonus bring down your costs, but other roads can be driven to lower your bills too.

However, you can also take the Advanced Riding Test.

This cost £62 to take at the Institute of Advanced Motorists – but that's peanuts in the face of the sort of money you'll have knocked off your insurance premiums.

More so than with other vehicles, insurers care where you store your bike.

Keeping your bike on the street overnight is seen by insurers as a major risk – and obviously that will be reflected in your premiums.

Keeping your bike in a garage is preferred by insurers, and will help you get the cheapest policy.

However, if using a garage isn't an option, there's other steps you can take to beef up your security and keep down your motorbike insurance premiums.

For instance, investing in a high-quality disc lock or even just an outdoor cover will help beef up your security and lower your premiums.

And finally, make sure you have the insurance that suits you. Know what type of insurance you need to make sure you're not overpaying for cover not relevant to you.

You can read more about it in one of our many motorbike insurance guides.

Don't accept your autorenewal quote

As with insurance for other vehicles, insurance companies love to jack up the cost of your policy when it's up for renewal.

At the end of your policy for the year, your provider will send you an auto-renewal letter with the new price you're expected to pay for another year of coverage.

You don't have to do anything – not even read the letter.

Helpful, right?

Maybe, but it's a waste of money. Your insurers is all but guaranteed to jack up your
premium costs, for no obvious reason.

Never - we repeat, never - accept your auto-renewal price. Always check how much your policy has gone up.

When your policy comes up for renewal, get yourself online to compare prices.

Chances are you will find a cheaper policy.

Don't switch bike insurance on a blind corner

Many of us don't switch, either out of a misplaced sense of loyalty or a fear of changing to a worse policy with a worse company.

If you ride a motorbike, maybe you're a risk taker by nature.

Unfortunately, loyalty to motorbike insurance companies does not pay. Well, not for you at least (insurance giants do just fine from you sticking around).

But even then, a fear of switching is understandable.

We'd recommend having a good poke around the internet before switching. See what your fellow bikers have to say.

And, if you do end up with an insurance provider you're not happy with, let us know and we'll help you fight back.

To make your switch wheelie easy, have the following to hand:
  • Number plate details: you don't need your registration number to get a quote but you will need it to buy your insurance.
  • Details of your No Claims Bonus (NCB) or past convictions: this could significantly reduce your premium depending on the length of your NCB.
  • Your driving licence: specifically, how long you've held it.
  • Additional driver information: other drivers' names, licence details and information on points or disqualifications.
