Your Gourmet Society Reviews
Avia Jay: 1/5 Stars 04/05/2017 Refund Required I never use gourmet society ever! I signed up for a free trial two years ago and never used it. Twice I have been billed for the yearly membership after countless attempts to unsubscribe! Finally I changed all of my contact details and removed my card in order to stop them from charging me. They used my paypal and charged me the membership fee today. I have emailed requesting a refund as I do not use the company there automated reply was from bank holiday saying their email was closed until the 2nd of May... it is now the 4th. Gourmet Society has not yet responded. Sarah Underwood: 1/5 Stars 17/01/2020 Renewal occurs before expiry of trial The trial card I received expires today, the 17th, but when I emailed to cancel I was told that it was too late as the renewal occured already. The last email I had from the company was about a month ago so it was fairly easy to forget about the subscription. Gourmet Society has not yet responded. Jonathon Walsh: 1/5 Stars 11/09/2019 Membership renewed when cancelled I contacted GS via their own web form to cancel my membership it was cancel weeks before it was due due to work commitments I am unable to phone up to cancel so I used the web form, the money has been taken and GS refuse to refund apparently it’s my fault for not phoning up, GS claim they sent a renewal reminding but are unable to resend the original email I never received any reminder Gourmet Society has not yet responded. Sara Ashan: 1/5 Stars 13/08/2018 Unclear trial membership cancellation process I started with gourmet society as part of their trial membership. I am a working mum and never got around ordering the card or using it. After 6 months, I noticed a deduction of £39.99 from my account after the trial period elapsed. I got in touch with them the same morning to ask for cancellation only to be told that there is nothing that they could do and it was part of their policy to deduct the full amount regardless of whether a card had been ordered or not. After explaining my position, the lady on the phone agreed to refund £10. I do not think it is fair to treat customers like this who have not even used your service. They mentioned that an email reminder had been sent before the deduction of the amount which I only got around checking after the deduction was made. Atleast, as a duty of care, the company should check if there is a live card and the service has been availed? I need my full refund and any help will be much appreciated! Story by Fred Isaac 14/03/2016 Gourmet Society cancellation process leaves a bad taste in members’ mouths Food discount club Gourmet Society has been slammed for its difficult cancellation process. Members of the service - which gives you a discount at over 6,500 UK restaurants - said they struggled to get through to customer service to obtain a cancellation code. When they failed to cancel within the set time frame, their subscriptions were auto-renewed and they were charged the full year’s price of £39.95. A Twitter community has been created for angry users to share their Gourmet Society stories. “It was very difficult to cancel” Daniel Russell, from Portsmouth, told us how his relationship with Gourmet Society went sour at the end of his £1 three-month trial. To cancel his trial, which expired on the 27th December, and avoid being signed up for a year, Daniel needed a code. “It was difficult to find out how to get a cancellation code or get through to anyone who could help," Daniel, 31, told us. “The email instructions were unclear and the site isn't easy to navigate. “I tried calling but after 10 minutes I hung up; I don't have time to hold for that long at work and, when I got home, the lines were closed.” When he did finally get through to Gourmet Society, Daniel was told his subscription had already been renewed and he had been charged £69.95. “I could no longer cancel because I had passed the point of no return," said Daniel, who works for a banking company. “It’s not fair on customers - you are almost being forced to have something you don’t really want.” We have asked Gourmet Society to respond to its members’ concerns and explain what is being done to improve the cancellation process. We’ll let you know how they respond. One user, Pilar Lopez-Cantero, suggested Gourmet Society should follow a more ethical policy and, like Spotify, require users to opt-in to any auto-renewal. How to cancel your Gourmet Society Membership Gourmet Society’s T&Cs reveal the cut-off point for cancellation is NOT the same as the Gourmet card’s expiry date; a fact that may confuse customers who expect to be able to cancel up until the date on the card. You can only cancel before the payment date, but the payment is taken before your Gourmet Society card expires. Here’s what you need to know about cancelling: New members: * You have 15 days after you first subscribe to cancel and get back your money * Cancel by emailing [email protected] or by calling 0800 043 1978. We recommend you email and clearly state that you know your rights as a consumer and want the membership cancelled immediately. If you don’t receive your refund, say you are willing to take the matter to Trading Standards. Auto-renewals: * To stop your membership auto-renewing (including after a free-trial), contact Gourmet Society on 0800 043 1978 or [email protected] to obtain a cancellation reference. * Here’s the important bit: you must get hold of a reference 15 days before your current membership term ends. So if your card’s expiry date is, say, the 20th, you have until the 5th to cancel and stop Gourmet Society charging you again. Gourmet Society says: “No refunds can be issued for any remaining membership term after payment has been taken for renewed memberships.” Make a complaint about Gourmet Society Founded in 2003, Gourmet Society is a trading name of Simard Limited. It is one of a host of companies, including Tastecard, to come under fire for hooking customers into costly auto-renewal subscriptions. In January, users branded Tastecard's renewals process as "deceptive and unclear". Citizen's Advice has called on companies offering trial periods for subscription products to remind consumers that they will enter into a binding contract at the end of the trial period. If you've been caught out by a misleading cancellation process or 'free trial', post on A Spokesman Said. We’ll fight your corner for a fair response.
