Car Insurance Company Reviews

Saga Car Insurance Review

Compare quotes to save on car insurance

Compare and Save Now
Saga insurance markets itself as specialising in car insurance for the over 50s.

The implication – while not stated – is that if you’re over 50 years old, you’ll get a better deal if you choose these guys.

Our experience is that this is often far from the case.

So, despite the marketing, don’t take it as a given that if you’re in this age bracket, you’ll be better off with Saga.

The quality of the quote you get will depend on several other factors as well, such as where you live and the kind of car you’re driving.

But Saga claims 20% of its customers who took out a new comprehensive policy between January and March this year paid just £153 or less for a year’s cover.

Of course, like many big insurers, you can insurer not only your car with Saga, but also take out travel insurance, home insurance and so on.

Some might like the convenience of having all this cover in the same place but, as ever, we urge you to compare car insurance deals first before making a decision.

Types of Saga car insurance policy

Saga offers the standard three types of cover – Third Party, Third Party Fire & Theft and Comprehensive.

Which type of car policy do you need? Read our guide, 'car insurance explained', to find out.

As with all car insurers, however, don’t automatically assume that you’ll get the cheapest deal with the least cover – third party insurance isn’t always cheaper as some insurers assume that just by opting for this level of cover, you are higher risk.

What benefits does Saga car insurance offer?

With all three levels of cover, Saga car insurance offers unlimited cover in the European Union at no extra cost.

Insurers must offer this by law (at least until we leave the EU), but only up to 90 days  Saga cover is for an unlimited period.

They also offer cover for anyone with a licence to drive your car in an emergency, legal costs arising from a third party claim and legal liabilities to third parties including up to £20m of property damage.

Another bonus that comes as standard is that Saga will protect your no claims bonus against two claims in a three-year period, so long as you have four years or more no claims discount.

Bear in mind, though, that as with all insurance companies’ no-claims protection, while you keep your discount, your premium will rise if you claim – you get the same discount, but on a higher premium, so you’ll still end up paying more if you claim.

Saga add ons and options

Saga offers the standard range of optional extras that you can add to your policy for extra peace of mind, if you’re willing to pay.

Before you do fork out, ask yourself: are car insurance extras worth it?
Picture
Here's what Saga offers:

Breakdown assistance

UK-wide breakdown service, which is discounted when added to a car insurance policy.

It offers breakdown cover round the clock and there are several levels of cover, all at different prices, that you can choose from.

Breakdown repair

This additional cover to breakdown assistance helps fund the cost of parts and labour for any garage repairs.

Cover includes costs of up to £500 per claim, for up to five claims a year, a wide range of parts, including those associated with the most common causes of breakdown such as flat batteries, starter motors and alternators.

There’s an excess of £25 per claim.

Legal protection

If you are involved in an accident that's not your fault and was caused by a known insured third party, this cover will provide up to £100,000 towards costs for trained claims handlers to recover uninsured losses following an accident.

It will cover claims as long as the legal team believe you can win your case.

Case handlers will seek recovery for any uninsured losses from a third party such as:

* Any excess you may be required to pay as part of a claim

* Travelling expenses

* Loss of earnings

* Compensation for personal injury.

Replacement car

Comprehensive cover includes a replacement car as standard if an approved repairer is repairing your car.

This option, though, also offers a replacement car if yours is stolen or written off.

Increased personal accident cover

This offers up to £50,000 for you or a partner if you suffer a serious injury following an accident involving your vehicle.

Regardless of whose fault it is, if you are seriously injured as a result of an accident involving your car, the Saga Comprehensive policy includes up to £5,000 compensation for selected serious injuries as standard.

For £15.99 a year the Increased Personal Accident extends cover to £50,000, covers a wider range of injuries, and includes a benefit of £200 per night for hospitalisation (for up to 10 nights).

Accident healthcare

This covers you for £1 million of private healthcare if you’re injured in a road accident in the UK.

Treatment cover includes: hospitalisation for up to 180 days, out-patient treatment, consultant and specialists’ fees and physiotherapy.

What do customers think?

Which? surveys customers to assess the best and worst car insurers.

Which? experts examine 31 car insurers’ standard policies and survey thousands of policyholders.

Each policy is rated on its key aspects to produce a policy score and a customer score based on how insurers were rated by customers.

Saga was placed joint fourth out of 31. See how different car insurers compare on price by comparing deals from across the market.

Here's what scored:

* Customer service: four out of five stars.

* Handling of queries and complaints: four out of five stars

* Transparency of charges: three out of five

* Value for money: four out of five

* Customer score: 67%

* Policy score: 77%

* Total: 72%

Which? also rates insurers as to how well they handle claims and how satisfied customers are.

Out of 23 insurers, Saga was in joint sixth place.

It scored:

* Customer service: 83%

* Speed of dealing with a claim: 78%

* Regular communication on claims progress: 75%

* Settlement value: 80%

* Overall satisfaction with claims: 69%

We like ….

- No upper age limit.

- The protected no claims as standard is attractive.

- The no time limit of EU cover is good.

- Scores well for customer service.

Should I switch to Saga if I'm over 50?

Saga specialises in over 50s insurance, but there’s hardly any reason anyone will get a better price in their fifties or even sixties with Saga.

And prices quoted for older drivers can vary widely.

Don’t imagine that just because it specialises in older drivers, it’ll be the most competitive.
