Story by Fred Isaac 09/02/2016 The sharing economy has revolutionised our spending habits. If you need a place to stay, you can rent a stranger’s room on Airbnb and travel there by sharing an Uber. And, if you’re shopping locally, car boot sale app Shpock promises to bring the flea market into your pocket. The app, launched in the UK in 2014, allows users to advertise their goods through the platform and sell to buyers in their community. Shpock’s growth has been explosive: last year its 10 million strong community bought and sold over £2billion worth of items. It's wildly popular and a great way of finding items to buy locally. But, when using any peer-to-peer shopping app, it pays to be cautious. One punter, Beth Stevens, contacted us to warn of the pitfalls of buying from strangers. “I bought an iPhone 5s for £150 and it was in really bad condition,” Beth explained. “The person that showed up was very quick to leave and now I know why. The Apple ID touch didn't work and the screen had been badly replaced.” When Beth requested a full refund from the seller, she says he refused and even left her a bad review. “I trusted him but the phone is not worth £150,” Beth added. So how do you avoid getting swindled on Shpock? Here's a few suggestions: Get the item posted: Shpock is designed to connect you with local sellers so you can pick the item up or they can deliver it face-to-face. But, if you’re worried about being diddled, it might be worth asking the seller if the item can be posted. You can make sure your order is able to be tracked by recorded delivery. Pay through PayPal: Getting the item shipped also means you can pay securely through PayPal. Buying through PayPal gives you extra protection when shopping online. Remember: every PayPal account has to be connected to an active email account. Make sure the PayPal account of the seller belongs to the user you’re chatting to. Alarm bells should start ringing if the user insists on using the PayPal of a third party. Ask the right questions: Don’t take it on blind faith that the pictures of the product you’re looking to buy are genuine. Ask the seller to show you any relevant warranties or documents. It’s also worth asking the vendor why they’re selling, how often the product has been used and how old it is. Check out the seller There’s no way you can be certain the user you’re dealing with is legitimate, but there are a few basic checks that help. Check the seller's reviews to find out how the Shpock community rates them - and also look at how the seller rates other users. If, like the user that scammed Beth, they often leave negative feedback about buyers, it might be best to avoid. Be very wary of a spotless account with no feedback at all. Scammers will often deactivate an account and pop up on a new one to avoid suspicion. When we raised Beth’s case with Shpock, a spokesman told us: “When exchanging products personally we highly recommend to check if they're in a condition as described. Marianna MacMillan: 2/5 Stars 12/09/2019 Buyer not responding Hi I have sent same email to shpock twice. i have tried to sell cabana 4 seat bar set for 150 pounds but i got an offer from lady to for 100 pounds hence i accepted it. That was on sunday 8th. Since that i have sent her 3 messages and no answer yet. If this is a time waster i would like to cancel the deal which is legally binding according to shpock. I will be moving house soon and need to get rid off stuff and this waiting situation is not helping at all. Either buyer wants it or not. Jon Tog: 1/5 Stars 14/11/2018 Why is there no UK phone support number to report fraud to Shpock? Why is there no UK phone support number to speak to Shpock? The only number I can find is an Austrian one. This does not instil confidence. I paid someone who refuses to send the goods or answer messages. I have his phone number but he does not reply. I have his bank account details and all the time he is still selling the same items on Shpock! Don't you care? I have blatant evidence of fraud but I can not speak to Shpock about it because they are evidently not interested. I see Shpock reps ignorranty pasting the same Austrain contact phone number on here as if it's going to help everyone. It does nothing but frustrate us! Are you aware that not everyone lives in Austria? Shpock....stop being so ignorrant...we are from UK not Austria so give us your UK support number...not your Austrian one. If you want to appear competent and worthy you should display a freephone number for every country you operate in, not just Austria. You should be ashamed. Shpock has not yet responded. Janine GG: 1/5 Stars 25/08/2017 Listings Not Showing! I have items listed on Shpock which are not showing on their site. They are showing in my selling section but not on the site. I have emailed Shpock regarding this but with No Reply! My daughter told me about this site so thought I would try it, but whats the point if your listings dont show & no response is given. Kirstine Cox: 1/5 Stars 05/12/2018 Scam seller, no action from shpock I've emailed shpock three times about a bag I bought on shpock. The seller actually wasn't the owner of the bag. She copied the listing from ebay and pretended it was hers. So I opened a paypal case. She then left me abusive feedback on shpock which is still there! She's scammed other people but continues to trade on shpock. She needs to be blocked and the feedback removed but shpock does nothing! Shpock has not yet responded. Claire: 1/5 Stars 20/09/2016 I have been blocked from my account I have been blocked of my acount for no reason and there saying its permanent well I'm not happy because everyone else is selling fake goods and everything and I'm blocked for no reason I am a genuine seller I wouldn't ever recommend this app to anyone and I'll be telling everyone also if i don't get my acount unlocked thanks. Kind Regards Your Shpock Team Emily Granger: 1/5 Stars 08/03/2017 Can’t stop alerts when no longer wanted My phone is now plagued with alerts from your app which I set up when I made my account (in 2014) I obviously don't want these alerts anymore yet there is no where in the app to cancel them and I'm getting 3 at a time a minimum of 3 times a day it's getting really annoying and I'm considering deactivating my account because of this Shpock responded on 10/03/2017: Hi Emily, to deactivate search alerts please tap on the magnifying glass at the top right when opening the app and then click on the X next to it (if you have an iOS device please swipe from right to left over the respective search alert and then tap on the X). Vas S: 5/5 Stars 25/02/2019 Not received item Hi, I was speaking to a seller regarding a product he was selling, came to an agreement to purchase an item, then purchased the item & paid for the item via bank transfer (I have proof of this), the seller agreed to post the item out via special delivery the next day, I was about to message him for contact details etc to get in touch with him if needs be. however he has since deleted his user on Shpock & I have not received the item & no refund or whatsoever, the username of this user on Shpock was 'Tee. A' User Deleted: 1/5 Stars 22/03/2018 Faulty item bought complained to Shpock about an item I bought that was faulty. Shpock sent the seller a message but the seller refused to contact me. I have sent Shpock messages asking for help but they have not replied and the seller has blocked me. Shpock has not yet responded. Monica Reid: 1/5 Stars 03/01/2017 An item brought has not been delivered. Sphock are not helping me get my money back. On 21st December I brought a Ps4 controller from a seller. It was brought gor £23 and I paid for it via PayPal. The seller promised delivery before Christmas. It is now 2nd January and nothing has been delivered. I have contacted the seller on numerous occasions and he is not responding. I contacted Sphock to log a complaint and they sent a message to him to contact me. He did and said he was away and needed to find the delivery details. He has not contacted me since and every time I try and contact sphock for help they send me a message saying that I have already logged a complaint. They have not contacted me to see if my complaint has been resolved or if I need any further help from them. I would like my money back asap. Shpock has not yet responded.
