Vicki Mcdonnell: 1/5 Stars 10/07/2017 Broken lids I have 10 bottles in my cupboard where the lids have broken..cab I buy replacements? Sistema Plastics has not yet responded. Story by Fred Isaac 22/02/2016 Mum blasts Sistema's cleaning instructions and demands product recall Manufacturer Sistema was forced to apologise after parents noticed how bacteria built-up inside their children’s Twist n’ Sip bottle caps. After mounting pressure, Sistema published video advice on how to clean the bottles. But one disgusted mum doesn’t think this is nearly enough and has voiced concerns about the effectiveness of Sistema’s cleaning instructions. Susie Cavill, from Edinburgh, told us she believes Sistema “should recall the product." At first, Susie, whose seven-year-old daughter Rosie has used Twist n’ Sip bottles for four years, tried to clean the parts by following Sistema’s instructions. “I opened up the lid with a knife and it was so scummy, there was mould and gunk inside the lid,” Susie, 42, explained. “Even after trying Sistema’s fix, you can’t get the middle bit out. You can get rid of the dirt on the outside but you can’t get in between the parts to clean the bottle thoroughly.” Susie, who organises events for the Edinburgh Fringe festival, says that even though you can remove the cover and nozzle, you can’t separate the two to get in between. She is worried that dirt will continue to build-up in the gap even after she has soaked the bottle in the dishwasher. “It’s so fiddly,” Susie, who sent us pictures to show us the parts she is unable to separate, explained. “The turquoise part does not come out fully to let you clean inside where it joins the pink part. “The scum is in there and you only need a little bit to cause some harm.” Despite being a loyal Sistema customer for years, Susie says she will only shop with them again if they completely redesigned the product. She has thrown her Sistema bottles in the bin and has moved on to a new make called Aladdin. “The fact that you have to use a knife to open the bottle up to see if it’s clean is ridiculous,” Susie added. “You just don’t want your kids drinking through a dirty bottle.” Are you a Sistema customer? If you’re a Sistema customer, and tried to clean your bottles, let us know how effective you found the company's instructions. Did you have any problems? Publicise your case to demand action. Susie is not alone in finding the bottles difficult to clean. Joanne Lennon told us how she couldn’t fit the bottle parts back together after dismantling them. “We were having great trouble opening up the lids on our children’s bottles to clean them properly even after following the videos,” Joanna explained. “The lids we have managed to take apart were disgusting inside and now will not go back together properly.” We have asked Sistema if customers unhappy with the cleaning solution will be eligible for a refund. A spokesman told us: "So far we have had a very positive response from customers who have contacted us. Anyone who has had an issue with the cleaning solution has been helped by our customer services team and, if necessary, offered a replacement top. We will continue to manage the feedback in this way. "As I mentioned in the initial statement we are already working on design changes to enhance the top and ensure that it meets our customer’s needs. I would also emphasise again that the tops have to adhere to child safety regulations so they can be difficult to disassemble.” CLICK HERE: You could save up to £497 on your energy bills by switching your supplier| COMPARE ENERGY QUOTES NOW |

Story by Fred Isaac 16/02/2016 Sistema responds to parent's fears over bacteria ridden kid's bottle Manufacturer Sistema has responded to an angry parent who claimed bacteria hidden inside the lid of the Twist 'n’ Sip cup had made his child ill. Dad Craig Beresford first posted about the problem on his Facebook wall. He received a flood of responses and his post has been shared thousands of times. Craig, from Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, said that, despite “cleaning the bottle and cap every day,” he couldn’t work out what was giving his seven-year-old daughter an upset stomach. “I figured it might be the Sistema bottle,” Craig, 38, explained. “It’s the only constant item she has had contact with the whole time.” Craig, who describes himself as “OCD about keeping things clean,” prised open the bottle’s cap with a knife. The cap, which Craig insists was rinsed and sterilised every day, isn’t designed to break in two and took a fair amount of force to dissemble. What he found inside horrified him. “The internal components had been hoarding bacteria,” Craig explained. “We were horrified and heartbroken that our little girl had been using the bottle in this state.” The grime had, according to Craig, accumulated in between the two parts of the cap, which twist together to form the suction part of the bottle. Sistema responds to Craig’s concerns When we saw Craig’s post, we knew this was an issue parents needed answers to and immediately contacted Sistema. Craig, who started the post as a “general warning to inspect your bottle caps,” is adamant he doesn’t want a witch-hunt or a boycott of the manufacturer. Many customers said they had used the Sistema bottle for years with no problems, whilst others advised owners to air dry bottles before use. The company’s General Manager, John Prest, explained: “A number of our customers have recently advised us that they are having difficulty cleaning our Twist 'n' Sip drink bottle caps. “We take this feedback very seriously and have posted on the home page of our website an announcement regarding this issue. “We manufacture our caps to meet international child safety standards and it is for this reason they can be difficult to disassemble. “Sistema is committed to producing products that fulfil all our customer’s needs and our team is currently working on a number of design improvements to ensure our caps meet this criteria. Our Customer Service teams are happy to help anyone who has any further enquiries.” Wave and Gripper cleaning instructions In the instructions, Sistema recommended: *After use, remove the cap from the bottle *Extend the pop up sipper to the open position * Put the top either in the dishwasher or hand wash and then place in water for five minutes with a sterilising solution. Sistema add: “If you want to thoroughly sterilise them we recommend that you disassemble the top as per our video instructions. There are three styles of Sistema caps currently on the market, please identify which one you have and watch the appropriate video.” If you have a problem with your Sistema bottle, please get in touch with A Spokesman Said.
