What to do if your flight gets cancelled

It's one of our worst fears.

You've done the long hours at work, saved up the money, dreamt for hours about soaking up the sun on a glorious beach but then your holiday gets cancelled.

It's a horrid feeling.

And it's one that thousands will be faced with across the country, and have already faced, due to the ongoing coronavirus situation.

Many will be hit with the news that their flights have been cancelled, with airline Flybe even entering administration, partly caused by a lack of demand for flights. Coronavirus has caused demand for journeys to decrease, leading some companies to cancel some flights.

Speaking to the Kelvin MacKenzie show on Love Sport Radio, travel expert Jill Starley-Grainger outlined what customers can do if their flights are cancelled by any airline company.

"So for getting your money back, the first thing is everybody who's listening to this programme, please make sure you take out travel insurance that includes something called in supplier failure or at a minimum, scheduled airline failure. Only about half of policies include that and that will cover you in this situation.

"The other thing to look out for if you're worried about coronavirus, so for your Barcelona trip for example, make sure you have a policy that includes travel disruption cover; most of them include that but not all of them. So that will cover you in the first instance.

"If you did not have travel insurance, you then have to look to your credit card company or your debit card company and they will typically refund your money as long as your booking was for more than 100 pounds. As long as the booking value was more than 100 pounds, under law- under Section 75- the credit card company has to refund you for that flight and for any consequential losses and most debit card companies do it under something called a chargeback scheme.

"But going forward, you can't always rely on this. Make sure you have that travel insurance that has in supplier failure and also travel disruption cover which will protect you in the case of any coronavirus situation. "
