Energy Company Reviews

Zog Energy Review

Save £££ on your energy bills

Compare and Save Now
It may sound like a sci-fi villain, but Zog Energy is, in fact, a UK energy supplier based in Ipswich.

It has been supplying British customers with gas since 2013.

As with many of the smaller suppliers, Zog claims its ‘simple’ approach keeps costs down and allows them to provide cheap gas to customers.

LOOKING FOR A CHANGE? SEE IF ZOG CAN HELP YOU SAVE

Started by two Queen’s Awards winners, the company focuses on specialist software and cloud computing.

Low overheads mean it can punt great deals to customers. To find out if switching can save you money compare energy suppliers now.

And will they save you and your family money? Continue reading our Zog Energy review.

Zog Energy Tariffs

Zog’s tariffs are designed as a simpler alternative to the confusing deals offered by the Big Six.

They’re very transparent and clearly lay out what unit rates and standing charges you need to pay.

Let’s take a look at the four main plans:

Zog Mercury 12

* 12-month fixed tariff

* Payment by Direct Debit

* £25 exit fee

Zog Juniper

* Variable tariff

* Payment by Direct Debit

* No exit fee

Zog Mercury 24

* 24-month-fixed tariff

* Payment by Direct Debit

* £25 exit fee

Zog Saturn 12

* 12-month-fixed tariff

* Payment by Direct Debit

* No exit fee

Zog’s price per kWh of gas – roughly between 2.4p and 3.8p depending on what tariff you choose – is competitively priced.

The company claims it can save customers on average £142 on their gas bills and challenges the notion that duel fuel options are always the cheapest.

But the only the way to find out if you can save money switching to Zog is by answering a load of questions about your house and energy usage.

Zog Energy green credentials

Zog Energy gets 100% of its power from natural gas.

Like most suppliers, it buys its natural gas from the wholesale market, meaning it will come from a variety of sources – some more renewable than others.

Sources include domestic supplies in the North Sea and pipelines from other countries such as Norway.

Zog doesn’t appear to invest in the kind of renewable projects trumpeted by other eco-friendly providers.

Ecotricity, for example, spends a fortune developing more eco-friendly ways to produce energy.

So if you care how sustainably your gas is sourced, it might be worth shopping around.

Zog Energy online offering

The Zog website is very rudimentary.

There's no fancy online portal to help you manage your energy usage – but you can provide meter readings to make sure your bills are accurate.

The whole site is geared around customers and businesses getting a quote and switching to Zog.

The simple, clear layout of prices isn't pleasing on the eye, but does help you understand the cost of your bill.

Zog Energy customer service

Zog aims to provide cheap energy by “keeping running costs low”.

Customers will worry this translates as ‘we don’t invest much in customer service’.

Zog can be contacted on social media and email but, and this will put off a fair few customers, there is no phone number on the Contact Us page.

But despite the lack of a phone line, Zog’s customer service is pretty good.

Between January and April this year Zog received 74 complaints per 100,000 customers.

In the same period Ovo Energy received 146 complaints per 100,000 customers, Flow Energy 384 and Spark 1,039.

In a June poll on MoneySavingExpert, 97% of voters rated Zog’s service as excellent.

Only time will tell if Zog can keep this up as it grows in size and adds customers.

If you have a complaint about Zog Energy, let us know at A Spokesman Said.

Payment

Zog only accepts Direct Debit.

Whilst this is the cheapest way to pay for energy, the lack of alternative options may put some customers off.

Zog take the payment on the agreed day of the month and send out monthly statements to show you how much you’ve paid and how much gas you’ve used.

Recent news:

Zog signed a letter from smaller suppliers to the Energy Secretary, Amber Rudd, expressing fears that under proposals from the Competition & Markets Authority only gas deals from the Big Six would appear on comparison sites.

The letter read: "We are deeply worried about the lack of transparency in the proposed system.”

Our verdict:

Pros:

* Competitively priced gas

Cons:

* No customer service phone number

* Not an eco-friendly supplier

* Limited website
