Ms Wallace, a creative director, was appointed to help lose the firm its reputation as a “Knightsbridge boys’ club”. So she held a diversity conference. Ms. Wallace, 44, introduced herself as a gay woman (why that is important is beyond me) and said her task was to “obliterate” white, straight, privileged, British men. Not unreasonably two middle-aged, white, British creative directors at the agency, Chas Brayfield and Dave Jenner, went to see some HR herbert about their future. When Brayfield and Jenner expressed their concern about the their jobs, senior execs thought they were against the diversity drive and two days later they were made redundant. They didn’t go quietly. They went to lawyers and yesterday a judge agreed with them and said they were the victims of sex discrimination. They should get a big pay-out. I certainly hope so. The agency says it’s appealing. They would do better to take it on the chin but get rid of Wallace who I see lives in some comfort with her partner in £1,250,000 house in East London. I won’t be shedding a tear for her. I thought Brayfield, a 54-year-old married father from Cricklewood, North London, got it right when he said; “I remember feeling I had a target on my back. As a middle-aged white man, it felt as if my job was in danger. “I remember thinking if I was a black 24-year-old woman I would be fine. If I had been gay even better.” This is a sorry tale and might explain why so many of our TV ads are suddenly dominated by minorities whereas they only represent 3% of the population. There must be a lot of Jo Wallaces in adland. How awful. PS If you plan to buy either car or home insurance I wonder if you might look at my small price comparison site A Spokesman Said as we earn a little commission from each sale which helps fund the research and editorial costs of running the site. It has the same offer as the big ones like Go Compare. Thank you.
