The BBC is an astonishing organisation. It trousers billions of our money every year and even in difficult times (and even its most ardent supporters must admit these are tough times) it always has its hand out for more. How on earth it can go into serious discussions with the government for an increased licence fee while paying well over a million to Gary Lineker and thousands a week to Emily Matliss is quite beyond me. But that’s what they do. So I am pleased to report that they have just been told that they will receive less than the rate of inflation over the next five years. According to the Times one of the reasons is that Red Wall areas do not approve of Lineker’s pay. That will be the first substantive return for the Northern voters backing Boris in 2019. Only a small step but it is one in the right direction. The government points out that ordinary families are facing steep rises in their bills without the help of the BBC. For instance come next month energy bills will go up by around 14% and next year national insurance will rise by 1%. But it’s the cheek of the BBC in asking for more which astounds me. During the negotiations they trotted out the usual arguments saying that “quality” programming would be affected unless they were given an inflation-proof rise. That is rubbish. The BBC are simply doing too much. They should retreat from commercial areas. These negotiations are an ideal time to simply cut the licence fee by a third. Yes it will mean less but the commercial world will fill it. I watched Andy Murray put up a fabulous display against No.3 seed Tsitsipas on Amazon Prime last night. Who could have forecast a decade or so back that a retail distributor would be bringing me my television? The world of TV is changing and I seriously object to facing jail if I don’t want to pay a licence fee introduced when there was only one TV station - the BBC. I am sure the BBC would prosper if it went over to Netflix-style payment i.e. pay if you wanted it and don’t pay if you didn’t. That is the future. The death toll was the highest for any single incident since 2011. I take issue with Biden over his saying that the UK could stay in Afghanistan if they wanted. That was a cheap shot. He ran up legal aid bills of millions and it has paid off. By only working half the week the GP can still make £50,000. As things stand, according to James Kirkup of the Social market Foundation, adding 1,019 qualified GPs to the workforce delivered the equivalent of only 331 more full-time doctors. I agree with Mr Kirkup that most employers who had to hire three people to do one job would be looking for a change in the system. I presume it was two of the officers who drove the cars while Andrew drove the third. One of the vehicles was a new petrol powered Land Rover defender costing around £53,000. Councils are already offered about £10,000 per Afghan migrant to provide them with accommodation and support. A further £5million has been earmarked which will surely not be enough. The Afghans are being rehoused across the country, with council leaders and mayors in Liverpool, London, Kent and Essex sharing strong statements of support. Others have been moved to West Yorkshire, Portsmouth, Hampshire, Surrey and Melton in Leicestershire. This is a massive operation but what has surprised me is the size of the average Afghan family. Afghanistan is one of the poorest nations on earth. Why would the parents want to produce children that they could not adequately clothe and feed. It is a similar issue in Africa. Thanks to The Times I have a further example of EU bloody mindedness. Apparently post-Brexit hostility to Britain Macron and his mates (if he has any) are blocking an EU move to use a Nottinghamshire-based company to fly over the channel looking for smugglers and spotting their boats at they set out in French waters. It looked like DEA Aviation based in Retford had won the order from Frontex, the EU policing agency, over Dutch and Austrian contenders. But the newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche said; “With the background of Brexit, Paris does not want to hear any talk of such an option. Off the record, France has imposed an outright refusal on Frontex.” Two can play at that game. Isn’t it time that all holdings in water and energy companies (I am with EDF) should be revisited and that those that are French owned are nationalised and then put up for sale again. The EU is paying £3billion a year to stop Turkey allowing literally hundreds and thousands of migrants from making their way across Aegean Sea into Greece and then into the no-borders system of the European Union. I have no idea if the two 14-year-olds who were arrested last night for the stabbing murder of father-of-three Jamie Markham will be charged or will be found guilty.
