It is now 48 hours since the American lawyers for Virginia Giuffre went public with their lawsuit against Prince Andrew alleging sexual abuse. And how has he reacted? With complete silence. That is not a strategy which will work with the British people.

Andrew is not some elderly rock star who can simply shrug off the accusation and head off to his hideaway in the Caribbean.

Andrew is a flawed but central character in the British establishment. The public enjoy the Royal family, particularly the Queen. They want them to be squeaky clean. This allegation, which will take a couple of years before arriving in court, is far too damaging to remain unanswered. 

Charles has  got his PR people to tell The Times that he sees no way back into public life for Andrew.

A Charles aide is quoted as saying; “His ability to feel and support for those having a tough time is well known.

“However this (the case) will be unwelcome reputational damage to the institution. He has long ago concluded that it is an unsolvable problem. This will probably strengthen in the prince’s mind that a way back for the duke is demonstrably not possible because the spectre of this accusation raises its head with hideous regularity.”

Andrew is currently in Balmoral with The Queen and his ex-wife Sarah. Sarah was allowed back into the royal fold now that Prince Philip is dead. He couldn’t stand her.

Apparently Andrew is keeping in touch with the London law firm which raises another question. How can he afford the legal fees involved? An expert on royal finances has told The Times that he simply hasn’t got that kind of money which is why he may have been hanging about with Jeffrey Epstein in the first place. 

It is time Andrew broke his silence. Every minute that passes is another minute that the nation will be inclined to believe he has something to hide.

He must come out with a very public and provable denial that he ever met Giuffre when she was just 17, a minor under US law.

If he can’t do that the court of public opinion will find him guilty.
