The charity markets the scheme as the “leading employers’ programme for ensuring all LGBTQ+ staff are free to be themselves in the workplace.” That scheme may well have been needed when Stonewall was set up 32 years ago but today all companies and government departments know the right thing to do and will have their own schemes. Which is why I back Liz Truss (the equalities minister and in my view a PM in the waiting) is pushing for all government departments to withdraw from the scheme. First it costs money and secondly the civil service has its own tried and trusted diversity scheme. Stonewall are becoming increasingly political in the transgender debate and I don’t think it helps their cause. Lady Faulkner, the new head of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, made a good point last week when she said that women (I imagine she had JK Rowling in mind) had the right to question transgender identity without being abused, stigmatised or put at risk from losing their jobs. In turn the Stonewall CEO Nancy Kelly said that although it believed in free speech (thank you for that) it was not without limit and there is a legal systems in place for people who are harmed by that. Surely she is not conflating the argument about men becoming women and for instance antisemitism. She appears to be and if that is her view it is a disgrace. This story, first broken by the Mail on Sunday is hard to believe. He’s a human right scholar. That explains it all. I think the time has come for the West, which has suffered so much more than China in the pandemic, to demand answers. If those answer are not forthcoming we should stop trade until they do. Von de Leyen and her crew insisted that EU citizens must have freedom of movement across the Swiss border receiving social security rights. The Swiss said that such a decision would never pass a referendum in their country. The decision to walk away, which I celebrate, puts in peril £200billion of mutual trade. Who on earth is going to hire Cummings after that display? Two months ago, in a shocking decision by the weak Head of Batley Grammar, the religious studies teacher was suspended after showing his class the cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad. A 14-year-old Muslim pupil went home and told his parents what he had seen. This led to a mob of Muslim protestors outside the school. The teacher feared for his life and that of his wife and four children. So they were forced to flee their council house and have remained in hiding protected by the police ever since. The teacher told the inquiry that the cartoon was included to initiate a discussion about the meaning of blasphemy. As a secular society that was entirely correct. However the inquiry added:” Nevertheless the Trust recognises that using the image did cause deep offence to a number of students, parents and members of the school community. “The Trust deeply regrets the distress this has caused and considers the topics covered by the lesson could have been effectively addressed in other ways and without using the image.” So that’s it. The cartoon won’t be used again. I don’t agree with that. I’m with Stephen Evans, chief executive of the National Secular Society who says the decision is a route to censorship that sets a poor precedent. I ask this basic question after seeing that Diane Abbott linked the shooting of BLM activist Sasha Johnson to racial injustice. That theory would make some kind of sense were it not for Scotland yard commander Alison Heydari saying it had nothing to do with it. I know a couple of teachers who have to suck up abuse (both physical and mental) from nasty 15-year-olds and instead of them facing either lengthy detentions or even better being kicked out of the school altogether, the kids simply get a slap on the wrist. Scotland Yard has announced that they are looking for four black men wearing dark clothes in relation to the shooting. As has been well chronicled Ms Johnson, a mother of two, was gunned down in Consort Road, Peckham, South London, at 3AM during a party. She is still critically ill in ICU. Both sides agree it was a drive by shooting. One side believes she was the innocent victim of a gang attack. Wrong place, wrong time was their verdict. Her friend Imarn Ayton said; “ There was a rival gang that may have heard about someone being in the party that they didn’t feel quite comfortable with or trusted and so they resorted to driving past and shooting into the garden and one of those shot hit Sasha. But I don’t believe she was the intended victim.” I Must say the use of comfortable or trusted in this context is bizarre. However the argument did make sense. Members of the party Sasha founded (its called Taking The Initiative Party) didn’t take that view. In a statement on Instagram they questioned the claims that she was not the intended victim and the assurances from the police there were no “credible” death threat towards her. They had another narrative. They said; “ We are disgusted by the way that this narrative has been portrayed as “black on black crime” not acknowledging that this is a hate crime or targeted attack at worst.” They went on to say Ms Ayton was not a friend of Sasha’s. We should all be grateful for racial cohesion that the only certainty was that the shooter was not white. This is quite shocking. All the while the National education Union has kept shtum about the row saying that the inquiry into the showing of the cartoon should be allowed to finish before they give their view. Why? I presume the union believes in free speech. I presume they want to protect their teacher from the mob? After all the union exercises its own free speech when they allow their union to support the people of Gaza. Or is that the link? If you are Muslim you can have the NEU support but if you are not you and your family must go into hiding. Very interested to see what NEU branches backed Israel in the war. There were brave staff on Panorama who knew something fishy had gone on but instead of there being an inquiry basically got shown the door. They will have a substantial claim. Plus the graphic artists who thought he was doing the BBC and Bashir’s bidding on behalf of Panorama by making the false bank statements only to be fired. His life has been destroyed. He will pick up a fortune. As BBC Head of News back in the mid-Nineties he carried out a perfunctory inquiry and claimed that Bashir was an “honest man.” Plainly absurd.
