For thirteen long years the EU and Swiss have been trying to negotiate a deal to replace a very flimsy arrangement basically drawn up on the back of a cigarette packet in the 1970s.

Von de Leyen and her crew insisted that EU citizens must have freedom of movement across the Swiss border receiving social security rights.
The Swiss said that such a decision would never pass a referendum in their country. The decision to walk away, which I celebrate, puts in peril £200billion of mutual trade.
Switzerland will now have “third country” status like the UK meaning it loses certain privileges and will have to put up with more red tape.
