As transgender athlete Laurel Hubbard is named in the New Zealand Olympic weightlifting team, I do wonder what the reaction would be if a boxer such as Anthony Joshua decided to switch gender and fight women.

I have never met world heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua but he seems an amiable cove. The kind of man you would want to keep the right side of.
Supposing he decided to do what appears to be quite fashionable these days and change sex. Would you have a view? You might be surprised but I suspect you would say it’s his life he can get on with it and wonder what size dress might fit him.
However if he chose to continue with his sport and wanted to fight women boxers I am sure like me you would be hostile.

Which brings me to the case of weightlifter Laurel Hubbard who was named in the New Zealand team for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Hubbard broke junior records as a man but did not compete as a senior international before she transitioned eight years ago aged 35. Now she will become the first transgender athlete against a field that is set to include the British medal contender Emily Campbell.

The British Olympic Association are clearly worried about the move and want greater gender research into fairness of trans athletes competing as women. It should be said that Hubbard met all the qualification criteria for trans athletes, including the testosterone threshold set by the Olympic Committee.
Its quite clear from all the stats that trans women retain biological advantages of once being a man even when they comply with all the rules.
To give you some idea of the difference between male and female athletes. In 2016 the Olympic 100metre champion Elaine Thompson was outperformed by 1,816 boys and men that year including 14-year-old, over 50s and Paralympic sprinters.
This problem is not going away but when discussing it with friends just raise the AJ question. That should keep them quiet.
