Despite everything Boris is 10% ahead in the polls. What can Labour do about it? Burnham is not the answer

I do tip my hat to Boris Johnson. No matter if we all die of Covid, no matter if the economy goes down the pan, no matter if we don’t have enough food to feed our children his poll ratings are unaffected.

The latest YouGov poll in The Times shows he is 10% ahead of Labour with the Tories at 41% and Starmer at 31%.

The Lib Dems are on 9% with the Greens down at 8%. They have less voters than leaders.

What can Labour do about all this? I suppose they could hope that all the Tories freeze to death this winter due to lack of gas or that Starmer decides to throw himself under a bus. Beyond that it does seem Boris can literally spend months in Marbella and nobody really cares.

Were Starmer to be forced out would a Burnham make any difference. I don’t think so. The South would definitely not vote for him and Northern voters have been receiving cartloads of cash from Boris whereas when Burnham was in the Cabinet he never mentioned the North once.

My sincere advice is not to go for an early poll. Nobody wants an election. Leave it to the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024.
