Missing from what is described in the Daily Mail as the society wedding of the year was Earl Spencer, who came to public prominence as the brother of Princess Diana.

That becomes more surprising when it was his daughter Lady Kitty Spencer who was getting married.

But it becomes a damn sight more understandable when you find out the beau is 62 - and Earl Spencer is only 57.

Lady Kitty is just 30 years old and a model. Her new husband is the fashion tycoon Michael Lewis (he is said to be worth £80million) who owns Phase Eight and other retail chains.

People who know Lewis says he is the most charming of men and that must be the reason that Lady Kitty fell for him because the three decade age difference would put off most women.

It certainly must be the reason that Earl Spencer, who if I remember correctly made the most inappropriate attack on Prince Charles at the Diana funeral, decided to stay on the Althorp estate rather than going to Frascati in Italy for the big day.

Lewis’s three adult children from a previous marriage were there. Instead of being walked down the aisle by her dad it was her brothers Viscount Althorp and Samuel Aitken who did the decent thing.

Not every father approves of their children’s choice in love but to be honest it is them who have to live with their choice and not you.

Earl Spencer should have gone and put aside whatever family squabbles caused the problem. He has had a lot of luck in life-being a member of the lucky sperm club was the first one - and he should have extended the hand of love to his daughter.

It doesn’t say much for him.
