I am very grateful to Allegra Stratton for not making me feel like an oddball. Ms Stratton is the government’s chief spokeswoman on climate change but more importantly for my sanity she is the owner of a “third hand” diesel Volkswagen Golf which she has owned for eight years.

And this is what she told Times Radio; “I don’t fancy (an electric car) just yet because she needed her car to visit relatives in far away places (Wales for instance!!) bs didn’t fancy the lengthy stops to recharge the battery.

Stratton, 41, who has two children aged seven and four and lives in North London , has family was all over the country. Dad in south Scotland, her mum in Gloucestershire, in laws in the Lake District, and her gran in north Wales. The maximum range for electric is 200 miles but anybody who has ever had an EV knows that you start developing a nervous tick if the gauge indicates you have less than 100 miles left on the gauge. It’s human nature.

I agree with Allegra. My partner and I faced a similar issue. She has an electric car while I have a hybrid (totally useless, a petrol car living off PR) and we were planning to go to Norfolk for a few days doing quite a bit of driving.

After very little debate we took the petrol one on the basis that I didn’t want to spend hours on end in a Norwich recharging point.

​The electric industry were rightly concerned that the nation’s leading light on climate change preferred her old diesel to the shiny jobs advertised on TV minute of the day.

A bloke called Toddington Harper , the CEO of Gridserve which operates fast changing points, claimed there were a lot of myths about electric vehicle charging points but claimed it can be just as convenient as a traditional petrol station. That is rubbish. It may be true in seven years time but right now it is rubbish.

​Last week Allegra annoyed her boss Alok Sharma, a former Tory Cabinet Minister and currently president of the important Cop26 climate conference in Glasgow, when she said one option for people who cared about the planet was to vote green.

I suspect that her views on electric cars won’t have helped their relationship. Be interesting to see if she still around when the conference starts.
