​Home Secretary Priti Patel is a clever woman whose hard work has got her to the top of the greasy pole.

But she staked her political career on stopping thousands of illegal migrants crossing the channel. And she has failed.

The number of illegals has now crashed through 10,000 with a record 482 coming ashore in one day.

It is not Ms Patel’s fault. The French don’t give a damn. 10,000 less for them to worry about.

And even if we did drag these boats back into French waters the French would simply drag them back into ours.

Both the smugglers and the illegals know that as a Liberal Western democracy the pressure is on us to do the right thing and be seen to do the right thing.

So that rules out doing anything dangerous.

​I still believe  the best solution is the Rwanda idea where we pay literally hundreds of millions to a hard-up African economy to set up a clearing house for the illegals.

Immediately they arrive we have planes waiting for them to take them to Rwanda where they stay until they have been officially okayed to enter the United Kingdom.

Those genuine refugees would be allowed in. The rest would have to stay in Rwanda or head back home.

Unless we do something dramatic pretty soon we will face the Afghanistan issue where literally millions will flee to escape the Taliban.

So Ms Patel has done her best but it hasn’t worked. We need a new mind and we need it soon.
