​I read and extraordinary fact in the finance pages of the Sunday Times. Lorry drivers are in such short supply that agency drivers who were making £350 a day in January now want between £800 and £1,000 a day.

I have always thought that driving those 16-wheelers is a tough job. Sleeping in your cab in the middle of Hungary is not my idea of fun so good luck to them shaking down the bosses who I presume have spent the last 18 months WFYH.

Eventually their wage rise will wash up in our supermarket bill. In fact Aldi say they have been forced to increase wages for their lorry drivers to keep their shelves stocked.

The problem was exacerbated by two things. 1) Brexit deterred EU drivers from working in Britain. 2) The “pingdemic” has added to the strain.

Dairy giant Arla, which supplies all the leading supermarkets, said that it was cancelling 600 deliveries a week because of the driver shortages. Tesco is offering HGV drivers a £1,000 bonus to sign on.

I love hearing these stories. The truckers are the unsung heroes of capitalism. They should be paid top dollar.
