When the astonishing and grainy photos of Matt Hancock first emerged I didn’t feel this was a resigning issue. Felt sorry for the spouses and their kids but thought he should stay in his job and not be given up to the mob.

Regrettably I no longer believe his position is tenable.

Although he is keeping out of sight for the moment he will have to emerge and until July 19 will have to defend mask, face and space or as a funny gag on online says ; Face, Space and Back to Your Place.
That is Mr Hancock’s problem. He has lost his authority and  has become a figure of fun in a very serious job..

That is not to say I embrace the nauseating reprimands from academics and politicians you would normally cross the road to avoid.

​On the front page of The Times they quote a Stephen Reicher, a member of some obscure government pandemic “insights group”. I looked him up an he’s a psychology professor ( how many are there on the payroll?) at the University of St Andrews. With Sturgeon in charge the Scots probably need all the psychological help they can get.

This is what he said;” Johnson has trashed all the advice we have given on how to build trust and adherence.”  Ridiculous and not true. Probably a Labour voter but Hancock has given him an open goal.

​It is difficult to tell if Hancock has done a decent job since we haven’t had a pandemic before and therefore tough to judge but my advice would be to quit now as this story is not going away and all you will be doing is bring more pain to you and your family.

The earlier he resigns the quicker it becomes a non-story and then he can face the more difficult question; Do I stay with wife  and the three kids or set out with Gina Coladangelo, the wife of the Oliver Bonas founder.

Friends have briefed that the relationship is “serious” and “not just a fling”. Let’s see.

What did make me laugh is that the same friend has said the affair started in May. It didn’t say which year.
