How to avoid having your car insurance SCAMMED this winter
The IFB (Insurance Fraud Bureau) have warned that winter weather can lead to a rise in SCAMMERS trying to take advantage of your policy - and you need to stay vigilant.
Particularly when there’s snow or ice on the roads; chancers employ a strategy where they DELIBERATELY crash into other road user’s vehicles - then claiming for damages on the insurance policy of the other driver.
Such behaviour is known as a ‘crash for cash’ scheme, and is relatively widespread across the UK.
In the IFB’s warning video, Mark Yeates, IFB's Investigations Manager said:
“‘Crash for cash’ is where fraudsters attempt to cause deliberate collisions with innocent motorists to try and get financial compensation.
“Most fraudsters do this by slamming on their brakes or driving erratically so the innocent driver behind will go into them.
“Some fraudsters also cause collisions by driving into the side of innocent motorists”.
Of course, slippery conditions give these idiots more of an excuse once they’ve got up to their antics, so be vigilant.
This is serious business: insurance companies lose £340 million each year from paying out on fraudulent claims.
And according to the IFB, as many as 10% of personal injury claims could be linked to this sort of scheme - so it’s not just your insurance policy which could be in danger.
Worst of all, this kind of fraud could be costing YOU big - even if you don’t have the misfortune to bump into one of the scammers yourself. The IFB says the loss of revenue could then be passed onto honest drivers in the form of higher premiums.
