It now emerges that homeowners living in older, rural and even listed properties risk being unable to sell if strict mortgages are introduced. Boris, who is not a home owner, has told mortgage lenders they will have targets for the energy performance on their properties. One estate agent said that those living in older properties could be left with homes they could not sell if buyers were unable to secure finance on them due to their lower energy efficiencies. The effect would likely to be felt more by less wealthy owners as deep-pocketed buyers would be able to overlook mortgage restrictions. Climate change is a phrase that has not crossed his lips in decades so why has Boris has come up with this enormous financial gamble. Does he believe it or is it the price of getting Carrie to say yes. He dreams up these ideas certain in the knowledge that the world’s major polluters (China, Russia, India) will not follow suit so whatever we do will make little or no difference. The only certainty about politics is when all parties are agreed we, the voter, are not being included in the conversation. The reality is that by 2030 Boris will not be in office and by 2050 will be in the Where Did It All Go Wrong Rest Home. With a bit of luck his ideas will go with him. It has the same offer as the big ones like Go Compare. Thank you. I will always be grateful to Boris Johnson for making Brexit real but frankly he has gone quite mad over climate change and signals a disconnect with the very people who voted for him. We are told that all gas boilers - that’s 27 million of them - will be on the scrapheap within a decade. And yet the experts say most flats and homes aren’t suitable for the boilers they have in mind. So what do those residents do; freeze to death. Other ‘’experts’’ say hydrogen is the answer as we can use the same pipes and there will be a much smaller cost for a new boiler. I don’t know what the solution is. More worryingly nor does Boris and his mates. It is inexcusable to come to the ordinary woman and man and say here’s a bill for between £7,000-£18,000 but we don’t know if it’s really the long-term answer. And that money is just the beginning. Your taxes will go through the roof. We don’t all have rich mates to pay for the new wallpaper in the bedroom. So if Boris and Co don’t know what’s best for your place my serious advice is quite clear; You must not do anything. So promise me no running out and buying a new boiler. Just sit tight until somebody sensible says they have an answer which does not cost you next year’s pay. As it is Cop 26 looks like a disaster. No China (28% of global carbon emissions) won’t be there because they have a load of coal and if they stop digging it up the lights will go out which will be very bad news for President’s Xi’s ambitions for a third term. Putin is not coming presumably concerned he will be arrested for conspiracy to murder. India’s PM Modi (I really admire him) won’t be there as India needs all the carbon it can get it’s hands on as it moves from developed world status to first world. Who can blame them? We have lived the industrial revolution for 250 years. They have had it for 60 years. They want some of the West’s success. I don’t blame them. France will turn up if only for Macron to smack Boris in the mouth. Mind you the good people of Glasgow have been smacking people in the mouth every Saturday night for decades. I am sure that is what we will remember Cop26 for. Get the latest outspoken views and opinion from Kelvin MacKenzie straight to your inbox. Sign up here for the Kelvin MacKenzie newsletter. My long-time chum Tony B has been boring the arse off me for decades about the joys of Newcastle and more particularly the city’s football club. I think he must have played every pass since winning the Inter-City Fares Cup in 1969. If he melted down the silverware since then he would be lucky to have enough for a Prince Albert. If you don’t know what that is Google it, this is a family column. Now that his pride and joy is owned by a country he could not be happier. Alongside 99.9% of fans they could not care less about Saudi Arabia’s human rights record. Being a fun-loving city they have started to wear tea-towel head-dresses as a tribute to their new owners. Plenty to smile about. Until today. Along comes the race charity Kick It Out who don’t like the head-dresses saying they can be viewed as racist, offensive and culturally insensitive. How ridiculous. On that basis we should be offended by Saudi businessmen wearing suits, shirts and ties. I do hope the owners and fans tell Kick It Out to focus on the serious stuff and leave Newcastle alone. Having owned the price comparison site A Spokesman Said for a number of years you would have thought I would know all there is to know about car insurance. I have just discovered I know very little. Take this story. My friend owns an electric Jaguar I-Pace worth around the £75,000 mark. She lives in the Great Dunmow area of Essex - it’s nearer Copenhagen than London - and wants to move to Weybridge in Surrey. So she call the car insurers LV who quote her £1,200 fully comp for Great Dunmow but if she moves the 80 miles to Weybridge that figure goes up to, wait for it, £3,500. Yes I did say £3,500. How is this possible? The lady from LV did not know how the figures were worked out. What we do know is that the company has algorithms which does the heavy lifting taking into account your claims record, cost of car, your age, thefts from the area, number of accidents in the districts etc. Click Here: Jean Burnley saved £174 on her home insurance | Get your cheapest home insurance quote now Click Here: Save £££ on mobile phone deals | Compare great value mobile tariffs now
None of this accounts for a trebling of her insurance costs. For instance my friend went immediately online and Aviva only wanted just over £1,000 if she lived in Weybridge. Could it be that included in the LV algorithm was software which worked out the cost of the address she was moving to and the company pushed up the price on the ability of the householders to pay? Whatever the answer the pricing policy is a disgrace. LV used to be owned by its members but a couple of years back was bought by the huge German company Allianz. Perhaps the Germans are paying us back for voting Brexit. I do need an explanation. Do go on price comparison sites before renewing or moving. You would be mad not to. I so agree with Stephen Pollard, the Editor of Jewish Chronicle, that the murder of Sir David Amess had nothing to do with the toxic nature of today’s political debate but everything to do with Islamist terrorists who target us non-Muslims with their deadly plan for a Muslim state with sharia law. In his piece in the Daily Mail he says; ‘’The mistake we make all too often in responding to Islamist terror is to react as if we can somehow negate it through changes in our behaviour. ‘’That is why it is so important that we do not react to this latest outrage by framing it only as a consequence of the raised political temperature.’’ Click Here: Save ££££ on your van insurance | Get a quote now Click Here: Save £££ on travel insurance | Make sure your holiday is covered | Compare cheap travel insurance now
I have been critical of Labour Deputy Leader Angela Rayner for calling Tories a ‘’bunch of scum’’ and although it reflected badly on Labour it did not lead to the murder of Sir David. The man who stabbed Sir David to death with 17 blows of the knife was somebody that had been suspected of being radicalised even when at school. He is said to have been converted (he didn’t have far too go) by watching online hate videos during the lockdown. Well. That’s going to be his excuse anyway. Michael Caine on Brexit, Boris and why I’m quitting after 150 movies but still writing a thriller10/18/2021 If you plan to buy either car or home insurance I wonder if you might look at my small price comparison site A Spokesman Said as we earn a little commission from each sale which helps fund the research and editorial costs of running the site. It has the same offer as the big ones like Go Compare. Thank you. When you read about a global superstar like Michael Caine you have a picture in your mind of a handsome, svelte man at the peak of his abilities. Then you come across a startling figure. He is now 88. Walks with a stick, has a gammy leg and a dodgy spine. And the only time he leaves the house is when his wife has the time to take him out for a drive. But what I most admire about the Caine who emerges from a fine Guardian interview by Xan Brooks is a man who knows his days of the red carpet are over but that doesn’t define him or restrict his ambitions in other areas. He is doing the interview because he has a film, Best Sellers, out on October 18. Not sure it has a theatrical release but can be seen digitally. The other week, he reveals, he was sent a screenplay that had his character running away from a bunch of crooks. This made him laugh. ‘’I can’t walk, let alone run’’, he says. ‘’And I’m more or less done with movies now.’ ‘’I’ve done 150 movies. I think that’s enough.’’ And so rather than sitting around in the Covid lockdown he decided to write a thriller, his first attempt at fiction. He says he’s still rewriting and tidying, making it look more professional. ‘’Paragraphs, punctuations, all that,’’ he says with a chuckle. The title is You Don’t Want To Die and is about two rubbish collectors in the East End of London who find uranium in the rubbish. Reflecting on life he says; ‘’My generation is going. My friends are dying off. Roger Moore, Sean Connery - those are two of my closest friends. Then, a couple of days ago Johnny Gold, who owned Tramp. And I have another very close friend who is very ill. ‘’If he survives until next weekend I’ll be very surprised. And I won’t mention his name, but you will read about in the papers.’’ He talks about politics. He says he is either a Right-wing Socialist or a Left wing Tory. Voted for Thatcher and Brexit. He says of the young; ’’If you’re growing up today you’re in for a tough time.’’ Not in favour of Boris going to Marbella for a week in the middle of petrol crisis (don’t agree with him there) but says any supply chain problems are temporary (agree with him there). Interestingly he moving from his huge house near Box Hill in Surrey to Wimbledon where daughter Natasha lives as the grandchildren have all grown up and no longer visit as often leaving him and his wife Shakira rattling around the mansion. He was born Maurice Micklewhite but a decade ago he changed it to Michael Caine. He did so because all his immediate family members are dead and there was nobody who knew him as a Maurice. I loved that interview and if you want to read it in full go on to the Guardian website. It’s free. I wonder for how much longer. The audience has collapsed and the ad revenues have gone with them. So is ITV’s share price basically reflecting a pisspoor management and an even worse outlook. Not sure who is running the show but the programme makers have not helped themselves by the duds they have hired to fill Pier's role. Prominent among the failures is Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair’s liar-in-chief who during his nine years as No.10 spokesman was accused of the very serious charge of sexing up a dossier claiming Iraq had access to weapons of mass destruction. He may be good at telling whoppers for Labour but he has no discernible talent for television. Boris Johnson has chosen, quite correctly, not to appear on GMB. Why should he go a television show which would put a socialist tosser like Campbell to question him? Would the questions be reasonable or would they all come from opposition view. I think we know the answer. However Campbell seriously overstepped the line when during the show he described Johnson as a ‘’coward and a charlatan’’ for not appearing. There are loads of political shows on TV why should he add value to GMB through his appearance? After all when he appeared on Radio Four’s Today programme the presenter Nick Robinson told him to ‘’stop talking’’. He is probably sick and tired of being insulted in public. There have now been a number of complaints to Ofcom about Campbell’s ‘’coward’’ jibe. I have no doubt that Campbell will be chastised by Ofcom as clearly he overstepped the mark. Ofcom could do us all a favour and ban him from the airwaves a for a year or so. The audience would go up, advertising would go up, and despite the efforts of the hopeless CEO Dame Carolyn McCall, the share price would go up. What is there not to like? No matter if we all die of Covid, no matter if the economy goes down the pan, no matter if we don’t have enough food to feed our children his poll ratings are unaffected. The latest YouGov poll in The Times shows he is 10% ahead of Labour with the Tories at 41% and Starmer at 31%. The Lib Dems are on 9% with the Greens down at 8%. They have less voters than leaders. What can Labour do about all this? I suppose they could hope that all the Tories freeze to death this winter due to lack of gas or that Starmer decides to throw himself under a bus. Beyond that it does seem Boris can literally spend months in Marbella and nobody really cares. Were Starmer to be forced out would a Burnham make any difference. I don’t think so. The South would definitely not vote for him and Northern voters have been receiving cartloads of cash from Boris whereas when Burnham was in the Cabinet he never mentioned the North once. My sincere advice is not to go for an early poll. Nobody wants an election. Leave it to the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024. She has just been convicted of threatening to attack a female friend of her boyfriend with acid. She will be sentenced on November 4 but having already been suspended by Labour you would have thought the people of Leicester East deserves better than this nasty piece of work. Instead she is delaying the inevitable by announcing she will be appealing the conviction. The judge has already told 56-year-old Webbe that she will probably be going to jail. That is good news. This is what Webbe told the lady she clearly viewed as a love rival; ‘’Get out of my relationship. I’ve seen all your posts. ‘’I’ve seen all of your naked pictures. The biggest laugh was the character witnesses that Webbe called; Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell and Diane Abbott. Corbyn said she was a ‘’warm-hearted, decent and dedicated person.’’ He is a bloody poor judge of character as she is none of these things and should not be allowed back in Parliament. Webbe made the string of threats in phone calls between September 2018 and April last year. Her boyfriend is a scout for Chelsea. One great quote emerged from her evidence. She said; ‘’ I am not mad, I am a member of parliament.’’ The jury is out on both statements. Get the latest outspoken views and opinion from Kelvin MacKenzie straight to your inbox. This may read like a gag but I imagine that there a number of PR companies using social media hoping that by planting tweets they can create a stampede for the companies they represent. There was a lot of waffle in the first official report into how Boris and Co handled Covid but the one number that I found shocking was the care home deaths; Incredibly one in four of everybody who died was in a care home, a staggering 41,675. Yes, 41,675. And the reason was simple. Hospitals decided as soon as Covid started to bite to kick out 25,000 elderly patients from the wards and into care homes without bothering to check if they had the virus. This was done allegedly to ‘’protect the NHS’’. And the result? It seeded the virus among the vulnerable. The report by the Commons science and technology and health and social care select committees admits the UK was not alone in suffering significant loss in care homes but said the scale of the loss was among the worst in Europe and could have been avoided. The over 80s were 70 times were likely to die than those aged under 40. It is far too easy to say that because they were old then their time was coming to an end anyway. They may well have wanted another year they didn’t want some NHS tosser to decide they were expendable. I would like each NHS Trust to investigate how many and where they send their elderly patients and work out how many died because of that decision. They were not just a number. They were somebody’s mum and dad. Somebody’s grandmother. I don’t want Boris to apologise. I do want the local NHS to investigate and then say sorry. It won’t bring the your relatives back but at least somebody in authority will have worried about their fate for the first time. Couple this with the average practice now having 5% more patients than six years ago and the reality is that you have more chance of catching an interesting item on Sky News than your doctor agreeing to see you in person. This is clearly wrong and will over time undermine the basis of state-funded health allowing the wealthy to see a private doctor while the less well off will suffer all kinds of ailments that a phone or zoom call will not capture. Men in the wealthiest areas now live a decade longer than those in the poorest. That lifespan has more than doubled in the last 20 years and if we our GPs don’t actually want to see the sick it must get worse. How is it that we train up GPs at enormous expense - the NHS and social care costs will amount to an incredible 44% of all state spending by 2025 - and yet once they receive the stethoscope choose to go part-time on their £100,000 salary as they will be still pick up a handy £60K. Shouldn’t we, the people paying for their training, seek a contractual undertaking that the GPs will continue to work full-time (unless they are sick or something). Before covid around 80% of consultations took place in a surgery but in August this figure was 57.7%. The suggestion is that the early spotting of serious illnesses like cancer are being missed. In one shocking case a man was told he had one year to live in a phone call from a GP. In another a patient was told remotely she had lung cancer while one woman was misdiagnosed with Parkinson’s over the phone. It is now being suggested that pharmacies could take over some of the GPs responsibilities. This is a good idea. Hospitals and chemists could prescribe antibiotics and other routine drugs while GPs would no longer have to write sick notes determining whether patients are fit to drive. The doctors say their refusal to see patients is because they are overloaded with work and seriously understaffed. It is true that there are almost 2,000 fewer fully-qualified full-time GPs than there were in 2015. Why is it that we cannot train up more of our people to be GPs? After all if we are to judge by the number of first-class honour degrees and double-star GCSEs our nation is full of bright young things. Could it be that we can lower the educational demands for being a doctor. I’m not suggesting that oncologists can get there through apprenticeships but surely you don’t need the same brainpower to be a GP in Bournemouth as an ear, nose and throat surgeon. We need more GPs and we need them now. The education bar is set too high. Much of the work could be done by super nurses. Let’s change the system. Hardly a car parking place yet alone a court free. How could that be on a greyish autumn day in October? The answer is WFH or “flexible working” as the experts prefer to call it. A huge number of people are now available during the day to go to the gym, to the tennis club or simply potter round to friends for a coffee all without the boss or workmates knowing. And from my experience it’s the CEOs and CFOs who are leading the charge. After all they have the bigger houses to enjoy plus in this last 18 months they would have discovered for the first time in 20 years they have families. And they enjoy spending time with them. This is my bet. Productivity will collapse. It is true certain tasks can be completed anywhere but the tension and competition of work in an office is what keeps people on their toes. So I don’t agree with Brewin Dolphin, one of Britain’s biggest wealth managers, scrapping plans to move into a new head office in the heart of the City of London because of a big jump in WFH. The relocation was going to cost Brewin £10million although it has not said what the cost of aborting the move will be. My bet is that in two years time, when covid is a painful memory, bosses will wake up to the fact that money they are saving on rents will be less than the money they are losing on deals failing or legal clangers happening because the company is not focussed on business but making sure a tennis court is free for a game with me. It has the same offer as the big ones like Go Compare. Thank you. I admire Cherie Blair. Came from nothing she got a first in law and while creating a stellar legal career as a QC was mum to four children. Not to mention being spouse to the slippery Tony Blair. Since she’s not short of a few bob why on earth, among all the opportunities that come her way, did she decide to take up the role of ‘’ethics advisor’’ to the Israeli spyware firm NSO. NSO was set up by former members of Unit 8200, specialists in the Israeli Intelligence corps, responsible for collecting signals intelligence and code breaking. They hit the jackpot with a very dangerous piece of software, Pegasus. It works by users receiving an SMS which delivers malicious software that compromises the device with no user interaction required. The perpetrator is able to seize full control of messages, cameras, emails, microphone and other apps. Macron is among 14 serving, or former national leaders, who have been spied on in this way. The software hit the headlines yesterday when It was revealed that Dubai’s horse-loving ruler Sheik Mohammed, 72, had in effect used Pegasus to spy on his ex-wife and her divorce lawyer Baroness Shackleton, who has acted for Prince Charles and Prince Andrew. According to evidence in the High Court Ms Blair called Baroness Shackleton on behalf of NSO when they discovered Pegasus was being used against Shackleton. What would have made Blair accept an offer from the spyware firm? She is called ‘’ethics advisor’. The whole basis of that business is unethical. I think she should disclose what she is being paid to give this alleged ‘’ethical advice’’ advice? I suspect it’s a hell of lot of money for very little work. My bet is there will be no change out of around £500K-a-year and the firm will be happy to pay it as she is a former PM’s missus and it gives them a cloak of respectability. Only the other day she and her husband were named in the Pandora Papers as having bought a house from a Middle East seller in such a way that it saved them £300,000 in stamp duty. That didn’t concern me. All I thought was that I too would like to be in that position. I don’t feel the same way about her connection with Pegasus. How would you feel if you partner or boss put that spyware on your phone? Unhappy I suspect. Blair claims she is a Socialist. I think being paid in this way would be considered quite wrong by Labour and Tory voters alike. Tear up that contract now Blair. I was going to save an entire industry and enjoy myself at the same time. What was there not to like? The truth is outside a couple of great car chase scenes it felt like a movie from a bygone age. The suits, the ties, even the Aston Martins seemed like a throwback to the Sixties when the first Bond film came out. Even Daniel Craig at 53 appeared too old for the role of an all-action fighting, shooting hero. I saw No Time to Die in a small cinema but there was no love coming from the crowd. No whooping and hollering. This franchise is coming to an end. There is no more reason to believe a Bond will survive than a Mondeo. There have been 25 Bond films since Dr No in 1963. 007 has had a great run and made a fortune for everybody concerned. It’s hard to see who will take over from Craig. To my mind it doesn’t matter if it’s a woman, a black actor, trans or a child I just can’t see it working. On the way out the cinema manager wished us goodnight. Kind of him but my sense was that he was more concerned about the future of his job. With Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sky and Apple+ producing such great television and with TVs being the size of small cinemas the days of going to the flicks are numbered. Back in 2018 as Mr Dix conducted his lesson he could see one of the students had his face down on the desk clearly asleep for at least 15 minutes. The student, still wearing his hoodie inside the class, did not even respond to his name being called out. To my mind that disgraceful act should have led to the student being suspended from Neath Port Talbot College in Wales. That didn’t happen. Instead in a bid to wake him Dix decided to gently lob a piece of cardboard at the teenager. And unbelievably this led to the college sacking Dix. So Dix went to an employment tribunal arguing that the firing was ‘’unduly harsh’’ but they rejected his claim saying he was ‘’reckless’’ in throwing the cardboard. I don’t agree. What should a lecturer do in the face of a sleeping student? Gently rouse him? Plead with him to wake up? Ask his student chums to read him the Iliad? Despite the ruling Dix won his claim for of unfair dismissal over the technical flaws in the investigation process. But he will receive no compensation because he would still have been sacked if the process had been fair. What a ridiculous judgment. Absurd that Dix was fired in the first place. Sure, it may have not been in the rules to throw stuff at thick and sleeping students but what harm was done. It was a piece of cardboard for God’s sake. The college could have simply taken him aside and sought an assurance that it should not happen again. What certainly should have happened is that the student have been at the minimum suspended and if I had my way be kicked out. The chances of that kid making anything of his life are nil and the fact that he has managed to destroy the life of a lecturer quite wrong. The college emerge shockingly. Why didn’t they stand by their employee? Be interested to hear from anybody with an inside track. Get the latest outspoken views and opinion from Kelvin MacKenzie straight to your inbox. But if you were a former Labour Prime Minister (yes a Labour PM) and your missus was a QC you might have thought you would think twice about it. After all when Tony Blair was in No.10 he campaigned about cracking down on tax loopholes for the super-rich but when faced with exactly the same position what did he do; he jumped in feet first and did the deal. This is all revealed in a great piece of financial investigation called the Pandora papers. It shows that back in 2017 Cheri Blair and husband Tony paid £6.7million for the four-floored building in Mayfair which was to become the HQ of her government advisory firm Omnia Strategy. The seller was a Bahraini minister and the Blairs acquired the property’s holding company and not the building and therefore avoided having to pay stamp duty. There is nothing illegal in what they did, a point the Blairs made in their response to the story. But being a Labour couple they surely have to be like Caesar’s wife, above suspicion. Or once he was out of Downing Street perhaps he no longer cared about his PR and his standing as a former Prime Minister. Shame on him if that is how he thinks. I am indebted to Fiona Hamilton, Crime Editor of The Times, for revealing the astonishing fact that Sarah Everard’s killer Wayne Couzens will keep at least a third of his pension because rules do not allow him to be stripped of the money he had paid in. Apparently Home Office guidelines show an individual’s pension cannot be forfeited by more than the 65% which came from the police purse. Four judges, in separate cases, concluded it would be wrong to take the remaining 35% as it represented the officer’s own contributions. Allegedly to strip any of that would be a clear infringement if the officer’s rights under the European convention of Human Rights. Is this a joke? The man will go down in history as one of nation’s most cunning and vile killers and yet while languishing in jail his pension will sit there nice and secure and presumably increasing in value until it is time for him to collect. Surely the law should be changed so when the judge hands down the sentence to Couzens and other police officers he can take away the pension right. In Couzens case he was only in the Met for less than three years so the sums are not huge but it’s the message to the public that matters. As for his family do they really want to have anything to do with him ever again? Does he wife really want to pick up that money in say a decade’s time? Isn’t it tainted? Hasn’t that cash got blood all over it. I would have thought so. Get the latest outspoken views and opinion from Kelvin MacKenzie straight to your inbox. And kept his eyes firmly closed. How incredible that a vile and cunning killer of an innocent young woman simply walking home could show any ordinary emotion. What on earth would make him shake? Didn’t he think he was going to be locked up for the rest of his life? Or having seen the justice system in action did he believe that he would receive a years’ probation and £20 out of the poor box? As a long-time believer in the death penalty I wish there had been another outcome but now I know that Couzens, 48, feels fear I feel happier that he will receive a second more severe sentence from fellow prisoners. Yes, he will be in solitary for much of his time but the moment prison officers look away (and I do hope they look away) the prisoners will pounce. The murder of Sarah Everard will have wide-ranging effect on all police officers. I said in a tweet that Couzens no more represents police officers than Hitler represents Germans. One follower had a better analogy saying Couzens no more represents police officers than Shipman represents doctors. Unfortunately as in all organisations there are bad apples. And in the Met’s case some very apples indeed. The Times reports (and Mailonline then stole) that Couzens exchanged misogynistic, racist and homophobic material with colleagues on Whatsapp literally months before he kidnapped, raped and murdered poor Sarah Everard. Three serving Met officers, an officer from Norfolk constabulary and another from the civil nuclear constabulary are now being investigated for gross misconduct. Could I suggest to all serving police officers they no longer allow colleagues to send them these online ‘’gags.’’ It could cost them their good name and their career. It will lead to a tension between friends but better that than cost them their jobs. These are changing times. And the reality is that male officers either have to change or they have to go. Since it’s only September 30 how could anybody know? Who was making this prediction? Mystic Meg? Actually it is somebody we should be taking note of. The warning comes from Clive Black, a Phd working for the brokers Shore Capital whose job it is to advise clients on where to spend their money in the retail industry. So I back his judgment because if you start telling people where to put their hard-earned money and you get it consistently wrong you won’t be in his kind of job for very long. And this is what he says and this is who he blames. Firstly he says it’s nothing to do with Brexit but all to do with mismanagement. He blames the civil service for some of the problems. ‘’It’s not just the politicians but their permanent secretaries. David Kennedy (the Director General for food) has been a disgrace,’’ said Black. Permanent secretaries in the Home Office are a disgrace as well. What the hell have they been advising ministers?’’ He expects Christmas to be a nightmare with a shortage of toys, bikes, sofas and electronic goods and the possibility that nut roasts rather than turkeys will be on the table. Were this to happen Boris would take a pounding in the polls. To my mind he is not working hard enough at the moment. What got him in No.10 will not keep him in No.10. The Brexit effect will vanish and competence will be the issue. That is not a strong suit for him. Get the latest outspoken views and opinion from Kelvin MacKenzie straight to your inbox. The victim impact statement by Susan Everard, mother of Sarah Everard, cannot be read without a wave of emotion enveloping you. There were lots of phrases that hit home. The one that struck me was; ‘’She spent her last hours on this earth with the worst of humanity.’’ Another said; ‘’ We have kept her dressing gown. It smells of her and I hug that instead of her.’’ So what is to be done with Wayne Couzens, a revolting piece of humanity who used his position and uniform, to take Sarah of the streets of London and murder her. I have always been in favour of the death penalty and there surely could not be a more perfect case for the state-sponsored death than Couzens. Why should he allowed to spend the rest of his life in a warm and secure cell with three-meals a day while the Everard family are tortured every day at their loss. Couzens is 48 and could reasonably be expected to live for another 40 years. The latest estimates I have seen is that average annual cost of looking after a prisoner is £41,000. So just keeping that piece of filth fed and watered for the rest of his life will be, at today’s rates, £1.6million. Frankly I don’t want to spend 50p on him. The main objection to the death penalty is the possibility of injustice. I agree that saying oops we got that one wrong is clearly a risk and therefore only those killers that the courts were 100% convinced were responsible should be considered. Further I would give the final nod to the families. After all they have to live with the pain. If my daughter were murdered like Sarah Everard I wouldn’t spend one second pondering the rights and wrongs. I would signal my belief that the killer should die. He already had two convictions for drink-driving when at 7.30 in the morning he flipped his motorhome, a Peugeot Boxer 330, hitting a BMW and blocking two of the three lanes on the M60 between junctions 14 and 13 for several hours. Wagster a 35-year-old tree surgeon, was then discovered, surprise surprise, to be three times over the limit. His explanation for his drunkenness was that he had overdone his partying while away with a friend in Morecambe. Absurdly he was not jailed with the idiot magistrate, known only as Mr Fry, saying; ‘’ You have come within a cigarette paper width of going to jail.’’ What does it take to put a danger like Wagster off the roads? In 1999 he was banned for three years for drink-driving and he got another three year disqualification in 2009 for a second excess alcohol offence. So in 22 years he has been done three times for being over the limit. What more evidence does that stupid magistrate require? We need to be protected and he needs to understand there is a price for drinking and driving. A ridiculous defence was put forward by his lawyer Isobel Thomas. She said he accepted the consequences of the accident could have been ‘’much worse.’’ Really? How insightful. Further, she said, he had been married for 12 years ( what had that to do with it?) but had a difficult time over the death of his mother three years ago. Many of us had mums who had died recently but we don’t go round driving motorhomes while blind drunk. He was given a 12 month community order and will be the subject of an alcohol abstinence monitoring programme for 120 days. He was also ordered to complete 150 hours unpaid work and was disqualified from driving for 28 months. Why only 28 months? Why not 60 months? This is man is a danger to us and he has no rights to be on the road. And that magistrate should be kicked off the bench. If anything he is more stupid than the driver. Either through poor legal advice or his own stupidity he has managed to persuade any intelligent person that his silence means he is as guilty as sin. But there is one easy way to prove that Virginia Guiffre is not telling the truth when she alleges he engaged in sex without her consent as she was a minor. All he has to do is to reveal the royal protection logs. The officers are with him at all times and if the records were disclosed hopefully for Andrew it would prove he wasn’t at the at the places and the times Ms Guiffre claims. Of course Andrew may have already seen those logs and it may be that they do not support his position in which case he is done for. But by keeping schtum he is in a world of pain anyway. Come November the Ghislaine Maxwell case begins where she is accused of pimping girls like Ms Guiffre for the disgraced Jeffrey Epstein. Maxwell could get 20 years and Ms Guiffre will be giving evidence. Without doubt Andrew’s name will be mentioned and he will have no chance of responding to allegations which will whistle round the world. So he might as well get his retaliation in first. I suspect he will come out fighting any week now. Let’s hope he shows more IQ that he in that car crash of an interview with Emily Matliss. Take their latest bizarre and quite wrong decision to give their Director General Tim Davie a £75,000-a-year pay rise. He was hardly skint before, making a handy £450,000 enough you would have thought to keep him in those trendy white trainers he likes wearing at public dos. The rise of 16.6% is our money. It’s not as though he has come up with some great idea to reduce the £157.50. In fact the very reverse. The BBC spend their entire lives pleading with the government for more money (our money) to increase the size of their empire. Why doesn’t the government tie his pay to reducing the size of the licence. I suspect all the over 75s would agree with me on that idea as from the end of July for the first time they had to cough up. So the politics of this rise are appalling. The reality is that ordinary people are happy to pay for what they want (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sky) but do not want to be forced for fear of jail to pay for stuff they seldom watch. The time has come to scrap the licence fee and replace it a subscription model. The BBC’s current income is way over £3bllion but I suspect subscription would bring in much more. That way Mr Davie could earn as much as he likes without there being a row every time. It’s time to dump the licence fee.
